I. Orientation

Listening is the active process of receiving, interpreting, evaluating, and responding to spoken communication. It differs from merely hearing, because effective listening requires attention to sounds, vocabulary, meaning, speaker intention, organization, tone, and context. In Advanced Communication Skills-II, listening is treated as a purposeful academic and professional skill that can be assessed through structured response tasks.

  • Hearing and listening: Hearing is the physical reception of sound; listening adds attention, interpretation, and response.
  • Meaning construction: A listener combines spoken words with context, prior knowledge, tone, pauses, and emphasis.
  • Levels of understanding: Listening may involve identifying facts, understanding implied meaning, recognizing relationships, evaluating arguments, and recording important information.
  • Active attention: The listener predicts content, identifies key points, notices transitions, and checks whether the interpretation is logical.
  • Contextual interpretation: Meaning depends on the speaker, audience, setting, purpose, topic, and relationship between participants.
  • Selective processing: Effective listeners focus on relevant information instead of trying to remember every word.
  • Evidence-based response: Answers should be based on information actually communicated, including clearly supported inferences rather than personal assumptions.
  • Common barriers: Noise, unfamiliar accents, limited vocabulary, distraction, anxiety, rapid delivery, and premature judgment can reduce comprehension.

II. Listening Comprehension Tasks — Purpose and Method

Listening comprehension tasks convert spoken information into a visible response. Each task tests a slightly different operation: selecting, explaining, recording, interpreting, locating, sequencing, or organizing information.

A. multiple choice questions

Multiple choice questions test whether the listener can identify the correct answer from several alternatives after distinguishing relevant information from distractors.

  • Question focus: Read the options before listening when they are provided; compare their key differences, such as dates, causes, quantities, or opinions.
  • Evidence matching: Select the option supported by the recording, not the one that merely repeats a familiar word. A speaker may mention “urban transport” but argue specifically for “improved bus networks.”
  • Distractors: Incorrect options may use words from the recording while changing the meaning, time, speaker, or relationship. The word “possible” is not equivalent to “certain.”
  • Paraphrase recognition: Correct answers often restate the recording. “The project was delayed because funding arrived late” may appear as “Late financial support postponed the project.”
  • Speaker stance: Distinguish reported opinions from the speaker’s own view. “Some critics claim the plan is expensive” does not mean that the speaker personally rejects it.
  • Efficient marking: Note a brief reason beside an uncertain option, such as “cause,” “contrast,” or “speaker’s conclusion.” Return to it only when later evidence changes the interpretation.
  • Worked example: If a lecture says, “The survey began in June, although the first responses were not collected until July,” an option stating “Data collection started in July” is more precise than one stating “The survey started in July.”

B. subjective questions

Subjective questions require answers in the listener’s own words and assess detailed comprehension, inference, explanation, and evaluation rather than recognition alone.

  • Direct information: Answer who, what, when, where, or how questions with the specific detail heard. A response such as “because of cost” is insufficient when the recording gives the concrete reason “maintenance costs increased.”
  • Inference: An inferred answer must follow logically from evidence. If a speaker describes repeated delays and staff shortages, the conclusion may be that implementation was difficult, but an unsupported claim about failure should be avoided.
  • Answer structure: Use a complete, concise sentence that contains the main point and its necessary qualification.
  • Paraphrasing: Change the wording without changing the meaning. “The policy reduced waste” can be expressed as “Less waste was produced after the policy was introduced.”
  • Scope control: Respond only to what is asked. A question about an effect does not require a long account of the background.
  • Accuracy: Preserve names, figures, comparisons, and relationships. “Before” and “after,” “increase” and “decrease,” and “cause” and “result” must not be confused.
  • Worked example: If the speaker explains that online classes increased access but reduced informal discussion, a suitable answer to an effect question would mention both the wider access and the weaker informal interaction.

C. note taking

Note taking is the rapid selection and organization of important spoken information so that it can be recalled accurately after listening.

  • Main ideas: Record the subject and central claim first. A talk about renewable energy may have the main point “Solar power is expanding because costs are falling.”
  • Supporting details: Add only details that explain, prove, compare, or develop the main idea, such as a percentage, example, reason, or consequence.
  • Abbreviation: Use consistent forms: “govt.” for government, “esp.” for especially, and “w/” for with. Do not abbreviate technical terms if the result may be unclear.
  • Symbols: Arrows can show relationships: cause -> effect, increase -> demand, and problem -> solution.
  • Organization: Use headings, indentation, numbering, and spacing to show hierarchy. A two-column format can separate “problem” from “response.”
  • Listening signals: Words such as “first,” “however,” “for example,” “in contrast,” and “finally” reveal structure and should guide the layout of notes.
  • Selective recording: Do not attempt transcription. Spoken repetition, greetings, and minor examples can usually be omitted unless they clarify the argument.
  • Worked example: Spoken information such as “Traffic congestion results from population growth, limited road space, and increased private-car use” can become:

    The symbols and shortened wording preserve the relationships without copying every sentence.

D. expressing stance

Expressing stance involves identifying and communicating an attitude, position, degree of certainty, or evaluation in relation to spoken information.

  • Stance categories: A speaker may express agreement, disagreement, approval, criticism, doubt, certainty, concern, or neutrality.
  • Degree of certainty: Words such as “definitely,” “probably,” “perhaps,” and “apparently” indicate different levels of confidence. A listener must preserve these differences.
  • Evaluative language: Adjectives and adverbs reveal judgment. “A practical solution” is positive; “an unrealistic proposal” is negative; “a controversial measure” signals disagreement or debate.
  • Contrast markers: “Although,” “but,” “however,” and “nevertheless” can introduce a change in position. The final clause may carry the speaker’s stronger conclusion.
  • Reporting stance: Use accurate verbs such as “argues,” “suggests,” “questions,” “rejects,” or “supports.” “The speaker suggests that…” is different from “The speaker proves that…”
  • Personal stance: When giving an individual response, separate the view from the evidence: “I support the proposal because the speaker shows that it lowers long-term costs.”
  • Balanced expression: Academic communication often acknowledges an opposing point before stating a position: “Although the plan requires initial investment, it may reduce operating expenses.”
  • Concrete distinction: “The speaker is concerned about implementation” is accurate when the recording highlights staffing and funding problems; “The speaker is completely opposed” is too strong unless explicitly stated.

E. filling in the blanks

Filling in the blanks tests the listener’s ability to locate exact or near-exact information and place it correctly within a sentence, note, form, or summary.

  • Grammar prediction: The words around the blank indicate the required form. “The policy was introduced in ” requires a time expression, while “The policy aims to ” requires a verb.
  • Content prediction: Read the surrounding sentence to anticipate the topic. A blank after “The two main causes are…” is likely to require a pair of causes.
  • Exact detail: Names, dates, numbers, units, and technical terms should be recorded carefully. “15 percent” must not become “50 percent.”
  • Spelling and form: A grammatically correct word may still be wrong if the recording requires a plural, past tense, or specific proper noun.
  • Answer limits: Instructions such as “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” control the response. Articles may count as words, and unnecessary additions can make an answer invalid.
  • Distracting repetition: The speaker may first mention an approximate figure and later correct it. The final, clearly signalled version should be used.
  • Context check: Insert the answer back into the sentence and verify grammar, meaning, and agreement.
  • Worked example: For “The research was conducted over a period of ___ months,” hearing “eighteen months” requires the answer 18 or eighteen, according to the stated response convention.

F. matching the statements

Matching the statements requires connecting spoken information with the correct person, place, category, heading, cause, effect, or description.

  • Identify the relationship: Determine whether the task matches speakers to opinions, problems to solutions, or stages to descriptions.
  • Create identifiers: Assign short labels to the options, such as A = cost, B = access, and C = quality, before listening.
  • Track speaker changes: Names, pronouns, and phrases such as “moving to our next guest” signal a new source of information.
  • Distinguish similar options: Two options may share a topic but differ in attitude or detail. “Supports funding” and “supports limited funding” are not interchangeable.
  • Use elimination: Cross out an option when the recording clearly assigns it elsewhere. This reduces memory pressure when the same options recur.
  • Avoid word matching: The correct connection may be expressed through paraphrase. “Remote work improves flexibility” can match “employees can arrange their schedules more freely.”
  • One-to-one checking: If each option is intended for one statement, confirm that no label has been used twice unless repetition is permitted.
  • Concrete distinction: If one speaker says public transport is “environmentally beneficial” and another calls it “too unreliable,” both discuss transport, but their matched stances are different.

G. correcting the order

Correcting the order tests the ability to recognize sequence, chronology, procedure, or the development of an argument.

  • Sequence markers: Listen for “initially,” “then,” “after that,” “meanwhile,” “eventually,” and “as a result.” These explicitly establish order.
  • Chronological order: Dates, stages, and time references determine sequence. “The survey was designed in March and conducted in April” places design before data collection.
  • Procedural order: Identify what must happen first for a later step to occur. In a laboratory process, preparation normally precedes measurement.
  • Argument order: Speakers often move from background to problem, evidence, alternative, and conclusion. This is logical order even without dates.
  • Cause and consequence: “Because” introduces a cause, whereas “therefore” introduces a consequence. Reversing them changes the meaning.
  • Repairing confusion: Mark the original items with numbers as they are heard, then transfer the sequence neatly after the recording.
  • Contradictory signals: If a speaker says “before returning to the earlier issue,” the reference signals a shift backward in discussion, not necessarily a reversal in real-world chronology.
  • Worked example: A project may follow identify the need -> collect data -> analyze results -> recommend action; placing analysis before collection breaks the process because the data are not yet available.

H. completing the chart

Completing the chart involves transferring information into a structured visual form that shows categories, stages, comparisons, or relationships.

  • Read the framework: Examine row labels, column headings, units, and categories before listening. The structure predicts what kind of information is required.
  • Category recognition: Decide whether each entry belongs under “advantages,” “disadvantages,” “causes,” “effects,” “cost,” or “time.”
  • Comparative information: Charts often require parallel details. Record the same type of measure in each column, such as cost in dollars or duration in months.
  • Hierarchy: A chart may move from a general topic to subpoints. Keep examples under the correct heading rather than treating them as separate main ideas.
  • Numerical accuracy: Preserve units and scale. “2.5 million” is not equivalent to “2.5 thousand,” and “per year” differs from “per month.”
  • Concise entries: Use keywords rather than sentences so that the chart remains readable. A cell labelled “main benefit” may need only lower energy use.
  • Cross-checking: Compare entries across rows and columns to detect omissions, duplication, or an item placed in the wrong category.
  • Worked example: A comparison chart for two transport systems might use:
