- The Acheulian tradition is especially associated with handaxes and cleavers and is found at sites such as Attirampakkam in Tamil Nadu, Hunsgi in Karnataka, Isampur in Karnataka, and the Narmada valley.
- Middle Paleolithic technology: Middle Paleolithic groups used smaller flake tools, including scrapers, points, and prepared flakes.
- Important evidence comes from the Son and Narmada valleys, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and the Kortallayar basin.
- The increased use of flakes suggests more varied cutting, scraping, and processing activities.
- Upper Paleolithic technology: Upper Paleolithic assemblages include blades, burins, points, and bone or antler implements in some regions.
- Sites such as Patne in Maharashtra and the Kurnool caves in Andhra Pradesh provide evidence of this phase.
- Blade technology involved producing elongated flakes from carefully prepared cores.
- Subsistence and settlement: Paleolithic communities hunted animals, gathered fruits and roots, and exploited riverine resources.
- Camps were generally temporary, although repeated occupation occurred near water, raw-material sources, and sheltered locations.
- The evidence does not justify assuming that every community depended equally on large-game hunting.
- Important sites and evidence: The Narmada valley has yielded a hominin fossil from Hathnora, while Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh preserves long sequences of occupation and later rock art.

Mesolithic communities combined mobility with increasingly specialized exploitation of plants, animals, fish, and aquatic environments.
- Microlithic technology: Common forms include lunates, triangles, trapezes, points, and backed blades.
- Tools were often made from chert, chalcedony, agate, and jasper.
- A single geometric piece could serve as a blade element in a composite arrow, sickle, or knife.
- Major sites: Bagor in Rajasthan, Langhnaj in Gujarat, Sarai Nahar Rai and Mahadaha in the Ganga valley, Adamgarh in Madhya Pradesh, and Bhimbetka are important Mesolithic locations.
- Bagor shows evidence of occupation near the Kothari River and animal exploitation; Ganga-valley sites provide burials and evidence of aquatic resources.
- Economy: Hunting continued, but fishing, fowling, shell collection, and gathering became important.
- Animal remains at sites such as Sarai Nahar Rai include deer and other fauna, while riverine settings encouraged fishing and water-resource use.
- Some evidence suggests early domestication or management of animals, but the transition was gradual rather than universal.
- Settlement pattern: Camps were often seasonal, but repeated occupation created substantial habitation deposits.
- Settlements were located near rivers, lakes, grasslands, and ecotones where several resources could be obtained within a limited area.
- Burials and society: Burials at Mahadaha, Damdama, and Sarai Nahar Rai indicate deliberate treatment of the dead.
- Grave orientation, body placement, and occasional associated objects provide clues about social practices, though they cannot by themselves establish a rigid belief system.
- Rock art: Mesolithic paintings at Bhimbetka and other shelters depict animals, hunting scenes, dancing, and human figures.
- Red ochre was widely used; scenes of archery and group activity suggest both subsistence and symbolic expression.

IV. Neolithic Culture — Food production and settled communities
A. Orientation
Neolithic culture is marked by polished or ground stone tools, food production, more permanent settlement, pottery in many regions, and the domestication of plants and animals. These features appeared at different times and in different combinations across India.
B. Neolithic Culture
The Neolithic witnessed major changes in subsistence, technology, architecture, and social organization, but it was not a single uniform cultural system.
- Agriculture: Early cultivation involved regionally different crops.
- Mehrgarh in Baluchistan provides early evidence of wheat and barley cultivation from the seventh millennium BCE and the herding of sheep, goats, and cattle.
- In the Ganga valley, sites such as Lahuradewa have been associated with early rice cultivation, though the chronology and nature of domestication remain important archaeological questions.
- Animal domestication: Cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs were among the animals kept by Neolithic communities.
- Domestication supplied meat, milk, traction, hides, and manure, but hunting remained significant in many settlements.
- Stone technology: Neolithic tools included ground and polished axes, adzes, celts, chisels, and grinding stones.
- Polishing produced durable cutting edges, while querns and mullers were used to process grain and other plant foods.

- South Indian sites such as Utnur, Piklihal, and Hallur show cattle-keeping, cultivation, stone tools, and distinctive ash-mound traditions.

- Coins: Punch-marked coins, Indo-Greek issues, Kushana coins, and Gupta coins reveal authority, economy, trade, iconography, and metal use.
- A coin’s legend may identify a ruler, while its symbols can indicate religious or political claims.
- Foreign accounts: Greek, Roman, Chinese, and other visitors recorded observations about Indian geography, cities, trade, and political systems.
- Their accounts are valuable but shaped by travel purpose, translation, limited regional knowledge, and cultural assumptions.
- Interpretation and limitations: No source is neutral or complete.
- Archaeology may show behavior without explaining names or beliefs; texts may preserve ideals rather than ordinary practice; inscriptions often emphasize royal achievements.
- Reliable history emerges by cross-checking evidence, identifying context, and distinguishing direct observation from later interpretation.
