Unit 1: Pre-historic culture in India
I. Orientation
Prehistory refers to the period before written records became available; Indian prehistory is reconstructed mainly through archaeology, environmental evidence, and comparative anthropology. It extends from the earliest stone tools, generally associated with the Lower Paleolithic, to the emergence of metal-using village societies before the mature Harappan phase (c. 3000 BCE). Dates remain approximate because different regions developed at different speeds.
- Evidence-based reconstruction: Tools, habitation sites, bones, pottery, burials, botanical remains, and rock art provide the main evidence.
- Technological sequence: Stone technology gradually developed from large core tools to microliths, ground stone axes, pottery, and copper objects.
- Food economy: Communities moved from hunting and gathering toward domestication, cultivation, herding, and settled village life.
- Regional diversity: The Indian subcontinent did not follow one uniform sequence; Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultures appeared at different dates in Kashmir, the Ganga valley, the Deccan, and eastern India.
- Relative chronology: Stratigraphy, typology, and comparisons between layers are essential where absolute dates are unavailable.
- Important distinction: “Prehistoric” means lacking written records, whereas “protohistoric” refers to societies with undeciphered or limited writing, such as the Indus civilization.
II. Sources of ancient Indian history — Evidence for reconstruction
A. Sources of ancient Indian history
Sources of ancient Indian history are the material, literary, and scientific remains through which past societies are studied.
- Archaeological sources: Excavated settlements reveal structures, tools, pottery, food remains, burials, and craft activity. For example, Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh preserves rock shelters and paintings, while Mehrgarh in Baluchistan provides evidence of early farming and herding.
- Stone tools: Handaxes, cleavers, flakes, microliths, and polished axes indicate technological skill and economic activity. Their form, raw material, and location help identify cultural phases.
- Stratigraphy: Objects found in lower, undisturbed layers are generally older than those above them. At a site, the sequence of soil layers establishes relative chronology.
- Scientific dating:
- Radiocarbon dating measures the decay of carbon-14 in organic material and is useful for remains up to roughly 50,000 years old.
- Thermoluminescence dating can estimate when heated pottery or stone was last exposed to high temperatures.
- Potassium-argon dating is especially useful for very ancient volcanic contexts.
- Environmental evidence: Pollen, animal bones, seeds, charcoal, and soil reveal climate, vegetation, diet, and human impact. Charred grains of wheat or barley, for instance, support claims of cultivation.
- Literary sources: Later Vedic, Buddhist, Jain, and Tamil texts illuminate social and economic life, but they were composed after much of prehistory and cannot directly describe Paleolithic communities.
- Limitations: Archaeology rarely identifies individual beliefs or political institutions with certainty. Interpretation must distinguish direct evidence—such as a grain or tool—from inference, such as assuming a particular ritual purpose.
III. Paleolithic Culture — The age of chipped stone
A. Paleolithic Culture
Paleolithic culture, or the Old Stone Age, covers the earliest and longest phase of human occupation in India, beginning at least around 1.5 million years ago and continuing until roughly 10,000 BCE. Communities depended primarily on hunting, scavenging, fishing, and gathering.
- Lower Paleolithic: The earliest phase is marked by the Acheulian tradition of bifacial handaxes and cleavers. Sites include Attirampakkam in Tamil Nadu, Isampur in Karnataka, and the Soan valley.
- Handaxe: A generally bifacial, pointed or oval tool used for cutting and butchering.
- Cleaver: A large flake tool with a broad cutting edge, suitable for chopping.
- Middle Paleolithic: From approximately 150,000 to 40,000 years ago, flake-based tools became more common. Scrapers, points, and prepared-core techniques indicate more specialized production.
- Upper Paleolithic: From roughly 40,000 to 10,000 BCE, blades, burins, bone tools, and more varied implements appeared. Bhimbetka and the Kurnool caves are important evidence zones.
- Settlement pattern: Groups occupied river terraces, caves, rock shelters, and open-air sites. Rivers such as the Narmada, Son, and Krishna supplied water, stone, and animal resources.
- Economy: There is no firm evidence of agriculture in this phase. Plant collection and animal exploitation were adapted to local environments.
- Social life: Small mobile bands probably cooperated in obtaining food and caring for dependants. Direct evidence for social organization is limited.
- Art and cognition: Some Bhimbetka paintings belong to later periods, but the shelters demonstrate the long cultural importance of painted and occupied rock environments.
IV. Mesolithic culture — Microliths and increasing ecological adaptation
A. Mesolithic culture
Mesolithic culture, or the Middle Stone Age, broadly dates from about 10,000 to 6000 BCE, although some Indian Mesolithic traditions continued later. It represents a transition toward more settled and regionally specialized ways of life after the Pleistocene climate changed.
- Microlithic technology: Tiny stone tools, often geometric triangles, lunates, and trapezes, were fixed into wood or bone to form composite weapons.
- Example: A crescent-shaped microlith could function as part of a sickle or arrow, even though the stone itself was only a few centimetres long.
- Major sites: Bagor in Rajasthan, Langhnaj in Gujarat, Adamgarh in Madhya Pradesh, and the Ganga valley sites provide evidence of Mesolithic occupation.
- Subsistence: Hunting remained important, but fishing, shell collection, bird-catching, and intensified gathering broadened the food base. Animal bones at sites such as Bagor indicate exploitation of wild species and, later, possible herding.
- Settlement: Many groups remained mobile, yet repeated occupation of particular shelters and open sites suggests seasonal camps and longer stays.
- Burials: Human burials at sites such as Langhnaj show intentional treatment of the dead. Grave evidence can reveal body position, associated objects, and possible social distinctions.
- Rock art: Mesolithic paintings at Bhimbetka depict humans, animals, hunting, dancing, and group activity. They are valuable cultural evidence, though exact meanings cannot be assumed from images alone.
- Transition: The Mesolithic was not simply a uniform stage between hunting and farming. In some regions it coexisted with early food production; in others, foraging continued for centuries.
V. Neolithic Culture — Food production and village life
A. Neolithic Culture
Neolithic culture, or the New Stone Age, is defined by the use of ground and polished stone tools, food production, domestication, pottery in many regions, and increasingly permanent settlements. In India it began at different times, from approximately the seventh millennium BCE in the northwest to later periods in eastern and southern regions.
- Northwestern Neolithic: Mehrgarh, beginning around 7000 BCE, shows mud-brick houses, wheat and barley cultivation, sheep and goat herding, beads, and early pottery. It is a crucial centre for understanding early farming in South Asia.
- Kashmir: Burzahom and Gufkral are associated with pit dwellings, polished tools, bone implements, and domesticated animals. Burzahom’s subterranean houses reflect adaptation to a cold environment.
- Ganga valley: Sites such as Koldihwa and Mahagara have been associated with rice cultivation and cattle use, though the dating and interpretation of early rice evidence require careful archaeological assessment.
- Northeastern India: Chirand in Bihar and related sites reveal pottery, bone tools, animal use, and settled life connected with riverine environments.
- South Indian Neolithic: Sites such as Utnur, Piklihal, Maski, and Hallur show polished axes, cattle keeping, millet cultivation, and distinctive ash-mound formations. Ash mounds are often linked with repeated burning of cattle dung at pastoral camps.
- Technology: Ground axes, adzes, celts, querns, mullers, and sickle elements supported woodworking, cultivation, and food processing.
- Economy and society: Domestication made food supplies more predictable but also created risks such as crop failure, disease, and dependence on herds. Storage, houses, craft specialization, and larger communities became increasingly important.
- Pottery: Handmade and later wheel-made pottery served cooking, storage, and transport. Decorative styles help archaeologists identify regional traditions.
- Significance: The Neolithic established the economic foundations for later village cultures, metallurgy, craft production, and social differentiation.
VI. Chalcolithic culture — Copper, stone, and village economies
A. Chalcolithic culture
Chalcolithic culture means the Copper-Stone phase, when communities used copper objects alongside stone tools. In India it generally dates from the third to the second millennium BCE, but chronology varied by region and some traditions continued into the early first millennium BCE.
- Ahar-Banas culture: Located mainly in southeastern Rajasthan, sites such as Ahar and Gilund show copper working, stone tools, black-and-red ware, houses, and agricultural-pastoral life. Copper was locally important because Rajasthan contains mineral resources.
- Malwa culture: Sites including Navdatoli and Kayatha in central India produced painted pottery, mud houses, copper objects, stone blades, wheat, barley, and pulses.
- Jorwe culture: Concentrated in Maharashtra, with sites such as Inamgaon, Nevasa, and Daimabad, this tradition is associated with painted pottery, farming, cattle keeping, and planned village spaces.
- Eastern and southern traditions: The Ganeshwar-Jodhpura complex in Rajasthan and other regional cultures demonstrate that copper use developed through multiple local networks rather than one single cultural system.
- Agriculture: Crops included wheat, barley, pulses, millets, and in some areas rice. Animal husbandry—especially cattle, sheep, and goats—supplemented cultivation.
- Craft production: Copper tools, ornaments, beads, pottery, stone blades, and shell objects indicate specialized skills and exchange. Copper remained less common than stone because ore, fuel, and smelting knowledge were limited.
- Settlement pattern: Villages commonly contained mud or wattle-and-daub houses, storage facilities, hearths, and working areas. Inamgaon provides evidence of substantial settlement organization and burials.
- Trade and interaction: Similar pottery forms, raw materials, and artefacts across distant sites suggest exchange networks linking farmers, herders, and craft producers.
- Limitations and significance: Chalcolithic societies were not all urban or equally complex. Their importance lies in consolidating village economies, metallurgy, regional exchange, and social differentiation before the emergence of larger early historic and urban societies.
