Unit 4: Parler du futur, des besoins et des personnes
I. Orientation — Situating events in time
French speakers distinguish between events happening now, completed events in the past, and future stages or needs. This unit concentrates on using the present and the passé composé to describe people’s lives, recount experiences, and connect past events with present circumstances.
- Central distinction: The present describes current situations, habits, and actions in progress; the passé composé presents completed past events.
- Basic construction: The passé composé contains a present-tense auxiliary, avoir or être, followed by a past participle.
- Narrative principle: A clear account identifies who was involved, what happened, when it happened, and why it was significant.
- Chronological organization: Expressions such as d’abord, puis, and enfin establish the order of events.
- Life stages: Birth, education, employment, relationships, retirement, and death provide a common framework for describing a person.
- Communication skills: Listening and speaking require attention to verb forms, time markers, sequencing, pronunciation, and agreement.
- Useful conventions:
- A completed event: J’ai terminé mes études en 2022.
- A current situation: Je travaille à Lyon maintenant.
- A future plan: Je vais déménager l’année prochaine.
II. Le passé composé — Forming and distinguishing completed actions
A. le passé composé avec avoir
The passé composé avec avoir combines a present-tense form of avoir with the past participle of the main verb.
subject + present tense of avoir + past participle
Nous avons visité Paris.- Auxiliary forms: Use j’ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, and ils/elles ont.
- Regular participles:
- -er → -é: parler → parlé, as in Elle a parlé au directeur.
- -ir → -i: finir → fini, as in Nous avons fini le projet.
- -re → -u: vendre → vendu, as in Ils ont vendu leur maison.
- Irregular participles: Frequent forms include avoir → eu, être → été, faire → fait, lire → lu, voir → vu, prendre → pris, and écrire → écrit.
- Use: Most French verbs take avoir, including manger, travailler, choisir, attendre, and rencontrer.
- Negation: Place ne…pas around the auxiliary: Je n’ai pas compris la question.
- Agreement rule: The participle normally remains unchanged: Elle a visité Rome and Ils ont visité Rome. Agreement may occur when a direct object precedes the verb, but basic narration usually uses unchanged forms.
- Worked example: Samedi, Léa a rencontré Paul, ils ont déjeuné ensemble et ils ont regardé un film. Each participle identifies a completed Saturday event.
B. le passé composén avec être
The passé composé avec être uses present-tense être and requires the past participle to agree with the subject.
subject + present tense of être + agreeing past participle
Elles sont arrivées.- Auxiliary forms: Use je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, and ils/elles sont.
- Movement and change verbs: Common examples are aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, naître, mourir, tomber, rester, retourner, and rentrer.
- Agreement:
- Masculine singular: Il est parti.
- Feminine singular: Elle est partie.
- Masculine or mixed plural: Ils sont partis.
- Feminine plural: Elles sont parties.
- Pronominal verbs: Verbs such as se lever, se marier, and se souvenir normally take être: Nous nous sommes levés tôt.
- Negation: Surround the auxiliary with ne…pas: Elle n’est pas née à Paris.
- Meaning and auxiliary choice: Some verbs can take avoir when used transitively. Compare Elle est sortie à huit heures with Elle a sorti son téléphone.
- Worked example: Marie est née en 2001, elle est allée à l’université et elle s’est installée à Lille. The feminine endings show that Marie is the subject.
C. la différence entre le présent et le passé composé
The present and the passé composé contrast current or habitual situations with completed past events.
- Present: It describes what is true now, what happens regularly, or what is currently unfolding.
- Passé composé: It reports an action viewed as completed at a definite or understood past moment.
- Present formation: Conjugate the main verb directly: Je travaille, nous finissons, ils prennent.
- Past formation: Add an auxiliary and participle: J’ai travaillé, nous avons fini, ils ont pris.
- Time signals: Aujourd’hui, maintenant, and tous les jours commonly accompany the present; hier, samedi dernier, and en 2023 commonly accompany the past.
- Direct contrast: Aujourd’hui, elle habite à Nice, mais l’année dernière, elle a habité à Bordeaux.
- State versus event: Je connais Luc expresses a current relationship; J’ai rencontré Luc en avril identifies the completed event that began it.
- Avoiding confusion: The auxiliary remains in the present grammatically, but the complete construction has past meaning: a parlé means “spoke” or “has spoken,” not “speaks.”
III. Organiser un récit — People, chronology, and life stages
A. raconter des événements passés
Recounting past events requires completed verb forms, a clear sequence, and enough context to make relationships between actions understandable.
- Opening context: Establish time and place: L’été dernier, je suis allé à Marseille avec ma famille.
- Main actions: Use the passé composé for successive completed events: Nous avons visité le port, puis nous avons pris un bateau.
- Participants: Identify people with names, relationships, or pronouns: ma sœur, mon professeur, mes amis, elle, nous.
- Cause and result: Connect events with parce que, donc, and c’est pourquoi: Il a raté le bus, donc il est arrivé en retard.
- Narrative order: Present events chronologically unless a time expression clearly signals a return to an earlier point.
- Closing detail: State the outcome or importance: Cette journée a changé ma façon de voir la ville.
- Consistency: Do not shift into the present when the narrative remains in the completed past; reserve the present for current commentary.
B. quelques étapes de la vie d’une personne
Life stages supply recognizable events for constructing a chronological biography or personal account.
- Birth and childhood: naître and grandir establish origins: Elle est née le 4 mai 1998 et elle a grandi à Dakar.
- Education: Use commencer l’école, étudier, obtenir un diplôme, and terminer ses études.
- Adult life: Typical milestones include trouver un emploi, déménager, se marier, and avoir un enfant.
- Professional development: Il a commencé comme assistant, puis il est devenu directeur.
- Later life: prendre sa retraite means to retire; mourir forms the past with être: Il est mort en 2019.
- Current stage: Connect biography to the present: Aujourd’hui, elle travaille comme ingénieure et elle habite à Toulouse.
- Future stage: Express an intended development with aller + infinitive: L’année prochaine, elle va changer de travail.
C. les marquers de temps
Time markers locate events and show whether actions are simultaneous, repeated, or sequential.
- Specific past time: hier, avant-hier, lundi dernier, en 2020, and à huit heures anchor completed events.
- Elapsed time: Il y a trois ans means “three years ago”: Il a quitté Paris il y a trois ans.
- Sequence: D’abord introduces the first event, ensuite/puis continue the sequence, and enfin/finalement introduce the last event.
- Current time: maintenant, aujourd’hui, and en ce moment normally frame present situations.
- Frequency: souvent, parfois, toujours, and tous les jours indicate habits, usually expressed in the present.
- Duration continuing now: Depuis connects a starting point to the present: Elle travaille ici depuis 2021.
- Future reference: Demain, la semaine prochaine, and dans deux mois locate anticipated events: Nous allons partir dans deux mois.
- Punctuation and position: A time marker can open a sentence for emphasis: En 2022, ils ont déménagé à Nantes.
D. les nomres ordinaux
Ordinal numbers express position in an ordered series and help structure dates, stages, and sequences.
- Core forms: premier/première is irregular; subsequent forms include deuxième, troisième, quatrième, cinquième, sixième, septième, huitième, neuvième, and dixième.
- Formation: Many ordinals add -ième to the number: quatre → quatrième. Final e is removed, while spelling changes occur in cinq → cinquième and neuf → neuvième.
- Agreement: Only premier has a commonly distinct feminine form: le premier jour but la première étape.
- Dates: Ordinals are generally not used for dates except le premier: le premier mai, but le deux mai and le vingt juillet.
- Sequence language: La première étape a été l’inscription; la deuxième a été l’entretien.
- Alternative term: Second/seconde may describe the second of two items, whereas deuxième works whether or not more items follow.
IV. Compréhension et expression — Connecting past and present
A. parler d’événements passés et actuels.
Speaking about past and current events requires explicit tense contrasts and suitable temporal connectors.
- Past event: J’ai commencé ce travail en septembre identifies a completed beginning.
- Present consequence: Maintenant, je connais mieux l’équipe explains the current result.
- Connecting expressions: Use avant, à cette époque, depuis, maintenant, and aujourd’hui to guide the listener between periods.
- Stable current condition: Elle habite actuellement à Bruxelles uses the present because the situation remains true.
- Completed former condition: Elle a habité à Genève pendant deux ans presents the Geneva period as finished.
- Comparison pattern: Avant, je travaillais loin de chez moi; en 2024, j’ai trouvé un nouvel emploi; maintenant, je vais au bureau à pied. The passé composé marks the decisive change.
B. écouter: des récits d’événements passés.
Listening to past-event narratives depends on recognizing auxiliaries, participles, agreements, and chronological signals.
- Auxiliary clues: Forms such as a, ont, est, and sont often signal the beginning of a passé composé verb phrase.
- Sound recognition: The participle parlé and infinitive parler sound alike, so the preceding auxiliary identifies a parlé as past.
- Agreement clues: In Elle est arrivée, the written -e is normally silent; meaning and subject identification remain essential.
- Time markers: Listen for hier, soudain, ensuite, and finalement to reconstruct chronology.
- Key information: Identify the person, location, event, order, and outcome instead of attempting to translate every word.
- Repetition and reformulation: Speakers may restate information: Il a quitté son poste, c’est-à-dire qu’il a arrêté de travailler pour cette entreprise.
- Intonation: Pauses and stress often separate context from the main event, especially after an opening phrase such as L’année dernière.
C. parler: raconter un souvenir ou un événement marquant.
An effective spoken memory combines brief context, ordered actions, personal reactions, and present significance.
- Introduction: Name the memory directly: Je vais raconter mon premier jour à l’université.
- Setting: Give a concrete time, place, and participant: C’était en septembre 2022, à Lyon, avec mon frère.
- Event chain: Use a limited sequence: D’abord, nous sommes arrivés; ensuite, j’ai rencontré ma classe; enfin, les cours ont commencé.
- Reaction: Add emotion with J’ai eu peur, j’ai été surpris(e), j’ai beaucoup aimé, or je me suis senti(e) fier/fière.
- Significance: Link past and present: Cette journée a été importante parce qu’aujourd’hui je suis plus indépendant.
- Delivery: Pronounce the auxiliary and subject clearly, maintain chronological order, and pause at connectors.
- Accuracy priorities: Check auxiliary choice, participle formation, agreement with être, and consistent use of past forms throughout the event.
