Exemplification is a method of paragraph development in which one or more specific examples clarify, support, or demonstrate a general statement.

  • Representative evidence: An example should reasonably reflect the category being discussed; an unusual case cannot automatically prove a general rule.
  • Quantity: One developed example may establish depth, while several concise examples may demonstrate range.
  • Explanation: Evidence must be interpreted rather than left to speak for itself.

    • Interpretation: “This feature gives learners direct control over the pace of review.”

These repeated activities create opportunities for cooperation among people who might otherwise have little contact. Community gardening can therefore develop social ties as well as produce food.

A complex paragraph develops one controlling idea through several connected analytical functions rather than through a single simple pattern.

  • Meaning of complexity: Complexity comes from layered reasoning, not merely from greater length or more complicated vocabulary.
  • Possible functions: One paragraph may define a term, distinguish it from another term, give an example, identify a cause, and explain a consequence.
  • Maintained unity: Although the supporting sentences perform different functions, they must all advance the same controlling idea.
  • Internal structure: A useful pattern is claim, clarification, evidence, analysis, and implication.
    • Claim: States the paragraph’s central assertion.
    • Clarification: Defines a key term or limits the claim.
    • Evidence: Supplies a concrete example, fact, or observation.
    • Analysis: explains how the evidence supports the assertion.
    • Implication: Shows why the point matters.
  • Hierarchy of ideas: Major support explains the topic sentence, while minor support explains or substantiates the major support.
  • Sentence relationships: Coordination joins equally important ideas, whereas subordination marks one idea as dependent on another.
    • Coordination: “The policy reduced costs, but it increased waiting times.”
    • Subordination: “Although the policy reduced costs, it increased waiting times.”
  • Cohesive reference: Pronouns and demonstratives must have unmistakable antecedents. In “This result changed the policy,” this result should refer to a clearly named finding.
  • Lexical cohesion: Repeating a key term, or using a precise synonym, keeps the subject visible across several reasoning stages.
  • Signposting: Connectors identify relationships such as addition (furthermore), contrast (however), cause (because), result (therefore), and specification (in particular).
  • Information flow: Sentences often begin with familiar information and end with new information; the new element can then become the starting point of the next sentence.
  • Paragraph boundary: A new paragraph is needed when the controlling idea changes, even if the new material remains within the same general subject.

B. Construction and Control

A complex paragraph remains readable when its layers of support are deliberately ordered and grammatically controlled.

  • Sentence variety: Simple sentences can emphasize key claims, while compound and complex sentences express relationships between ideas.
  • Length control: A paragraph should be long enough to develop its claim but divided when a second controlling idea emerges.

Remote work changes communication by reducing informal contact. In a shared office, employees can ask brief questions or notice problems during spontaneous conversations. Remote teams, by contrast, often depend on scheduled meetings and written messages. Because these channels require more deliberate action, minor concerns may remain unspoken. Managers must therefore create regular opportunities for low-pressure communication.

IV. Sequence: Organizing Events, Stages, and Instructions

A. Sequence

Sequence is a paragraph pattern that arranges information according to time, procedural order, spatial progression, or another necessary series.

  • Chronological sequence: Events are presented in the order in which they occurred, as in a historical account or process description.
  • Procedural sequence: Actions are presented in the order required to achieve a result, such as collecting data before analyzing it.
  • Logical sequence: Ideas move through necessary reasoning stages, such as identifying a problem, evaluating options, and proposing a solution.
  • Topic sentence: The opening identifies the process or development and may indicate its purpose or endpoint.
  • Sequence markers: Initially, first, next, subsequently, meanwhile, afterward, finally, and eventually make order explicit.
  • Time clauses: Conjunctions such as before, after, when, while, and until show relationships between actions.
  • Tense control: Historical sequences usually use consistent past forms; general processes commonly use the present simple.
  • Parallel steps: Instructions are clearest when each stage begins with a verb in the same form: “Collect the responses, classify the data, and calculate the totals.”
  • Simultaneous action: Meanwhile and while indicate overlapping events rather than consecutive ones.
  • Cause versus order: Events occurring one after another are not necessarily causally related; causal claims require additional evidence.

B. Applications and Limitations

Sequence provides clarity only when the order is meaningful and the connections between stages are explicit.

  • Completeness: Essential intermediate stages must not be omitted, especially when one step depends on the result of another.
  • Proportion: Important stages receive sufficient explanation, while routine stages remain concise.
  • Transitions: Markers should clarify genuine shifts rather than appear mechanically in every sentence.
  • Consistency: Writers should not move backward and forward in time without clear signals such as earlier, previously, or by that stage.
  • Outcome: A concluding sentence may state the final result or explain the significance of the completed sequence.
  • Worked example:

A research team first defines the population it intends to study. It then selects a sample that represents relevant features of that population. After collecting responses with a standardized instrument, the team checks the data for omissions and errors. Finally, it analyzes the verified data and relates the findings to the original research question.

  • Structural analysis: The markers first, then, after, and finally establish procedural order, while repeated reference to “the team” maintains cohesion throughout the paragraph.
