I. Orientation: The Nature and Foundations of Research
Research is a systematic, transparent, and critical process for producing or refining knowledge. It begins with a problem or question, proceeds through an appropriate design and evidence-gathering process, and concludes with reasoned interpretations that can be scrutinized by others.
- Systematic inquiry: Research follows an organized sequence, commonly moving from problem identification to literature review, research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
- Empirical grounding: Claims are supported by observable evidence, such as survey responses, interview transcripts, experimental measurements, documents, or field observations.

- Objectives: Objectives translate the purpose into specific tasks, such as measuring turnover intention, comparing departments, or identifying recurring experiences.

- Null hypothesis, (H_0): No relationship or difference exists in the population.
- Alternative hypothesis, (H_1): A specified relationship or difference exists.
- Literature review: The review synthesizes what is known, disputed, and missing. It should compare concepts, theories, methods, and findings instead of merely listing publications.
- Conceptual or theoretical framework: The framework identifies the concepts and expected relationships guiding the study. For example, job demands-resources theory may connect workload, autonomy, support, and burnout.
- Methodology: The proposal justifies the overall approach and design, such as an experiment, survey, case study, ethnography, or mixed-methods study.
- Sampling plan: The researcher defines the target population, inclusion criteria, sampling method, proposed sample size, and access procedure.
- Data collection: Instruments and procedures are specified, including questionnaires, interview guides, observation protocols, tests, or document-selection criteria.
- Analysis plan: The proposed analysis must answer the research questions; examples include regression for relationships, thematic analysis for interview patterns, or integrated comparison in mixed-methods research.
- Quality criteria: Quantitative proposals address reliability, validity, and bias, while qualitative proposals commonly address credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability.
- Feasibility: The scope must match available time, access, expertise, technology, and funding. A well-designed project that cannot recruit participants is not practically viable.

A research paradigm is a worldview that shapes what researchers consider real, what they accept as knowledge, and how they believe knowledge should be produced. Paradigms influence questions, researcher-participant relationships, methods, and standards of quality.

Research paradigms are distinguished through their assumptions about reality, knowledge, values, and appropriate methods.
- Ontology: Ontology concerns the nature of reality; it asks whether reality exists independently of observers or is socially constructed through experience and language.
- Epistemology: Epistemology concerns the nature of knowledge, including what can be known and what relationship the researcher has to the object of inquiry.
- Axiology: Axiology concerns the role of values. It examines whether values should be controlled, acknowledged reflexively, or used explicitly to support change.

IV. Research Contributions: Advancing Knowledge and Action
A research contribution is the identifiable difference a study makes to what is understood or done. Contribution does not require a completely unprecedented topic; it may arise from a new explanation, context, method, dataset, synthesis, or application.

Research contributes to theory and practice when its findings extend explanation and support decisions beyond the immediate dataset.

Research ethics protects autonomy, welfare, justice, privacy, and scholarly integrity while preserving the social value of research.
- Respect for persons: Individuals are treated as autonomous agents capable of deciding whether to participate.
- Informed consent: Participants receive understandable information about the study’s purpose, procedures, duration, risks, benefits, confidentiality, and right to withdraw.
- Voluntary participation: Consent must be free from coercion or undue influence. Excessive payments or recruitment by a person in authority may compromise voluntariness.
- Beneficence: Researchers seek meaningful benefits, including useful knowledge, while designing procedures that promote participant welfare.
- Non-maleficence: Physical, psychological, social, legal, and economic harms must be minimized; sensitive interviews, for example, may require referral or distress protocols.
- Justice: The burdens and benefits of research should be distributed fairly. Vulnerable groups should not be selected merely because they are convenient or easily controlled.
- Privacy: Privacy concerns when, where, and under what conditions information is collected, particularly in homes, workplaces, online spaces, or sensitive settings.
- Confidentiality: Access to identifiable information is restricted through measures such as coded identifiers, encryption, limited permissions, and secure retention schedules.
- Anonymity: Data are anonymous only when identities are not collected or cannot reasonably be linked to responses; removing names alone may not prevent re-identification.
- Deception: Deception requires strong justification, minimal risk, lack of a suitable alternative, prior ethical review, and appropriate debriefing.
- Vulnerable participants: Children, cognitively impaired adults, dependent employees, prisoners, and economically disadvantaged groups may require additional safeguards.
- Ethical review: An institutional review board or research ethics committee assesses risks, consent procedures, recruitment, privacy, and safeguards before data collection begins.
- Research integrity: Fabrication invents data, falsification manipulates materials or results, and plagiarism presents another person’s work as one’s own.
