I. Orientation: Prehistory and Its Archaeological Foundations

Prehistory is the period of human development before the availability of deciphered written records. In the Indian subcontinent, it extends from the earliest stone-tool-using communities to the emergence of literate urban and early historic societies; its chronology varies considerably by region.

Defining characteristics:

  • Nature of evidence: Knowledge comes mainly from stone tools, pottery, habitation deposits, burials, rock art, animal bones, plant remains and traces of ancient environments.
  • Archaeological context: An artefact gains historical meaning from its location, associated objects and stratigraphic layer; an isolated handaxe reveals less than one excavated from a dated deposit.
  • Relative dating: Stratigraphy places lower, undisturbed layers before upper layers, while tool typology compares changes in artefact form and manufacturing technique.
  • Scientific dating: Radiocarbon dating is useful mainly for organic remains up to about 50,000 years old; thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence and palaeomagnetic methods extend the chronological range.
  • Technological sequence: Prehistory is conventionally divided into Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic stages according to major changes in tools, subsistence and settlement.
  • Regional variation: These stages did not begin or end simultaneously throughout India. Hunting, farming and metal-using communities often coexisted in different ecological zones.
  • Environment and subsistence: Climate, rainfall, rivers, forests, grasslands and available animals shaped mobility, food collection, agriculture and settlement.
  • Cultural change: Transitions were gradual rather than sudden; new practices such as farming or copper use usually existed alongside older hunting and stone-working traditions.

II. Palaeolithic Culture — The Age of Hunting and Chipped Stone

A. Palaeolithic culture

Palaeolithic culture represents the earliest and longest phase of human prehistory, characterized by hunting, gathering and the manufacture of chipped stone tools.

  • Chronology: The Indian Palaeolithic broadly extends from the earliest known stone-tool traditions, over a million years ago, to approximately 10,000 BCE, though dates differ by site and region.
  • Lower Palaeolithic: Large core tools dominated the earlier phase.
    • Acheulean tradition: Bifacial handaxes and cleavers were shaped on both surfaces; Attirampakkam in Tamil Nadu has produced exceptionally early Acheulean evidence.
    • Soanian tradition: Pebble and flake tools occur in the Soan valley and adjoining north-western sub-Himalayan region.
  • Middle Palaeolithic: Prepared cores, flakes, scrapers, points and borers became more common, roughly between 100,000 and 40,000 years ago in many Indian sequences.
  • Upper Palaeolithic: Blades, burins and increasingly specialized tools appeared approximately between 40,000 and 10,000 BCE; evidence is found at sites such as Patne in Maharashtra and Kurnool caves in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Manufacturing technique: Stone was shaped through percussion.
    • Hard-hammer method: A stone hammer detached large flakes from a core.
    • Prepared-core method: The core was shaped in advance so that flakes of a desired size and form could be removed.
  • Raw materials: Quartzite, chert, quartz, basalt and limestone were selected according to local availability; the Narmada and Hunsgi valleys supplied suitable stone near habitation zones.
  • Subsistence: Communities depended on hunting, scavenging and gathering roots, fruits, seeds and shellfish; animal bones and cut marks provide evidence of meat consumption.
  • Settlement pattern: Groups were generally mobile and used river terraces, rock shelters, caves and open-air camps. Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh preserves a long sequence of human occupation.
  • Social organization: Small cooperative bands probably shared food, protected camps and transmitted knowledge of animals, seasons, water sources and tool production.
  • Fire: Controlled fire, where securely evidenced, offered warmth, protection and food preparation, but preservation is uneven and claims must depend on archaeological context.
  • Human remains: The Narmada hominin fossil from Hathnora is the most important early human fossil discovery from India, although its precise classification remains debated.

B. Historical significance

The Palaeolithic laid the technological and social foundations from which later prehistoric cultures developed.

  • Technological achievement: Symmetrical handaxes required planning, manual skill and knowledge of fracture patterns rather than random stone breaking.
  • Ecological adaptation: Sites occur from the Himalayan foothills to peninsular river valleys, demonstrating adaptation to diverse climates and landscapes.
  • Long continuity: Slowly changing stone industries reveal sustained cultural learning across thousands of generations.
  • Main limitation of evidence: Organic tools, clothing and food containers rarely survive, so stone artefacts form only a partial record of Palaeolithic life.

III. Mesolithic Culture — Microliths and Post-Glacial Adaptation

A. Mesolithic culture

Mesolithic culture was a transitional stage in which hunter-gatherers adapted to post-glacial environments through microlithic technology, broader food use and increasingly settled occupations.

  • Chronology: It generally began around 10,000 BCE and continued into the sixth to fourth millennia BCE, with microlith-using communities surviving longer in some regions.
  • Environmental setting: After the Pleistocene, warmer Holocene conditions altered forests, grasslands, water sources and animal populations, encouraging diversified subsistence.
  • Microliths: Small stone tools, commonly less than 5 cm long, included blades, triangles, lunates, trapezes and points made from chert, chalcedony, jasper or agate.
  • Composite tools: Microliths were fixed into wooden or bone shafts to form arrows, spears, knives and sickles; several small inserts could create one efficient cutting edge.
  • Subsistence pattern: Hunting remained important, but fishing, bird-catching and the collection of wild grains, fruits and tubers broadened the food base.
  • Habitations: Repeated occupation of favourable localities indicates reduced mobility. Bagor in Rajasthan, Langhnaj in Gujarat and Sarai Nahar Rai and Mahadaha in Uttar Pradesh are major sites.
  • Burials: Mesolithic cemeteries in the Ganga valley contain extended human burials, sometimes with grave goods, revealing deliberate treatment of the dead and stable group territories.
  • Animal management: Bagor has evidence associated with sheep, goats and cattle, although the timing and extent of domestication must be assessed separately at each occupational phase.
  • Rock art: Bhimbetka paintings depict hunting, dancing, animals and group activities; their themes illuminate social life, though not every painting can be dated securely to the Mesolithic.
  • Regional economy: Coastal and riverine groups exploited fish and shellfish, while communities in semi-arid areas depended more heavily on game, seeds and seasonal water sources.

B. Historical significance

The Mesolithic demonstrates adjustment rather than a simple, immediate replacement of hunting by agriculture.

  • Technological efficiency: Microliths conserved raw material, were portable and could be replaced individually in composite implements.
  • Social development: Cemeteries and recurring camps suggest stronger attachment to particular landscapes and more organized community identities.
  • Economic transition: Intensive plant collection and selective interaction with animals helped create conditions in which food production could later develop.
  • Cultural continuity: Microlithic tools continued alongside farming and metal use, showing that archaeological “ages” frequently overlapped.

IV. Neolithic Culture — Food Production and Settled Village Life

A. Neolithic culture

Neolithic culture is distinguished by food production, domesticated plants and animals, settled villages and, commonly, ground and polished stone tools.

  • Chronology: Neolithic development was regionally uneven, beginning at Mehrgarh in the north-west around the seventh millennium BCE and appearing later in Kashmir, the Ganga valley, north-eastern India and southern India.
  • Agricultural economy: Wheat and barley were important at Mehrgarh, rice occurs in Neolithic contexts of the middle Ganga region, and millets and pulses became significant in peninsular communities.
  • Animal domestication: Cattle, sheep, goats and other animals supplied meat, milk, hides, traction and manure, reducing—but not eliminating—dependence on hunting.
  • Stone technology: Polished celts and axes were durable tools for woodland clearance and woodworking; querns, mullers and grinding stones processed grain.
  • Settlements: Mud-brick or wattle-and-daub houses, storage facilities and hearths indicate permanent or semi-permanent village life.
  • Mehrgarh: Located in Balochistan, it provides early evidence of farming, herding, mud-brick structures, craft production and long-distance exchange.
  • Kashmir tradition: Burzahom is known for pit dwellings, bone tools, hunting and later farming; Gufkral also preserves the transition toward food production.
  • Ganga valley: Koldihwa, Mahagara, Lahuradewa and Chirand are associated with early village economies, including debated or regionally significant evidence for rice cultivation.
  • Southern Neolithic: Sites such as Hallur, Utnur, Piklihal and Tekkalakota combined cattle pastoralism with cultivation; ash mounds are linked to repeated burning of cattle-dung accumulations.
  • North-eastern Neolithic: Shouldered celts and cord-impressed pottery characterize sites such as Daojali Hading, reflecting connections with eastern and Southeast Asian technological traditions.
  • Craft and exchange: Pottery, basketry, bead-making and weaving expanded household production, while non-local stones and shells indicate exchange networks.
  • Social effects: Stored surplus encouraged population growth, property claims and division of labour, although early villages were not uniformly hierarchical.

B. Historical significance

The Neolithic transformation reorganized the relationship between human communities, plants, animals and land.

  • Sedentism: Permanent residence enabled substantial houses, storage, repeated cultivation and community burial practices.
  • Demographic change: A more dependable food supply could support larger populations, though crop failure and disease created new vulnerabilities.
  • Landscape alteration: Forest clearance, grazing and cultivation produced lasting human modification of local environments.
  • Limitation of the “revolution” model: Farming spread through gradual adoption, local experimentation and interaction; hunting and gathering remained economically important.

V. Chalcolithic Culture — Copper-Using Village Communities

A. Chalcolithic culture

Chalcolithic culture refers to communities that used copper alongside stone tools, usually within agricultural village economies before or outside widespread iron technology.

  • Chronology: Major non-Harappan Chalcolithic cultures flourished mainly between the third and first millennia BCE, with substantial regional differences.
  • Mixed technology: Copper axes, chisels, fishhooks, bangles and blades existed beside stone blades and agricultural implements because copper was scarce and relatively expensive.
  • Ahar–Banas culture: South-eastern Rajasthan sites such as Ahar and Gilund are known for Black-and-Red Ware, white-painted designs, copper objects and farming.
  • Kayatha culture: Centred in Madhya Pradesh, it produced distinctive pottery, copper artefacts and evidence of village settlement during the third millennium BCE.
  • Malwa culture: Navdatoli and Eran represent farming settlements with painted pottery, circular or rectangular houses and cultivation of wheat, barley and pulses.
  • Jorwe culture: In Maharashtra, sites such as Inamgaon, Nevasa and Daimabad reveal planned houses, storage structures, agriculture and regional craft specialization.
  • Subsistence: Communities cultivated cereals, pulses and oilseeds, maintained cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, and supplemented production through hunting and fishing.
  • Pottery: Wheel-made and painted ceramics became important cultural markers; forms and designs help archaeologists identify regional traditions and exchange.
  • Settlement hierarchy: Differences in settlement size suggest larger regional centres surrounded by smaller villages, especially in the Deccan Chalcolithic.
  • Craft specialization: Copper-working, bead-making, pottery and stone-blade production indicate skilled labour and exchange of raw materials over considerable distances.
  • Burial practices: Adults and children were buried in varied ways, including urn burials; at Inamgaon, burials beneath house floors suggest ties between households and ancestors.
  • Social differentiation: Unequal house sizes, storage capacity and grave goods point toward emerging distinctions in wealth or status without proving fully developed states.
  • Decline and transformation: Climatic stress, agricultural difficulties and changing exchange systems contributed to the abandonment or contraction of several settlements after the second millennium BCE.

B. Historical significance

Chalcolithic cultures connected village agriculture with metallurgy, specialized production and increasingly complex regional organization.

  • Metallurgical advance: Copper broadened the range of tools and ornaments but did not replace stone, producing a genuinely mixed technological economy.
  • Regional diversity: Distinct ceramic and settlement traditions show that Chalcolithic India was not a single uniform culture.
  • Economic complexity: Agricultural surplus supported craftspeople and exchange networks linking metal sources, stone quarries and farming settlements.
  • Historical position: These cultures formed an important bridge between Neolithic villages and later iron-using, urbanizing and state-forming societies.
