I. Orientation

Human evolution is the long biological and cultural process through which members of the genus Homo developed increasingly complex tools, social relationships, symbolic practices, and food-producing economies. The archaeological sequence usually moves from the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age, c. 2.6 million–10,000 BCE), through the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age, broadly c. 10,000–8,000/6,000 BCE), to the Neolithic (New Stone Age, beginning at different times after c. 10,000 BCE), followed in several regions by the Chalcolithic (Copper-Stone Age, broadly c. 4500–1500 BCE).

  • Periodisation: Dates are approximate because cultural phases began at different times in Africa, western Asia, Europe, and South Asia.
  • Archaeological evidence: Stone tools, habitation floors, animal bones, seeds, pottery, burials, metals, and rock art are the principal sources.
  • Technological change: Tool-making progressed from chipped stone industries to microliths, polished stone, pottery, metallurgy, and specialised craft production.
  • Economic change: Human groups gradually shifted from hunting and gathering toward herding, agriculture, storage, and exchange.
  • Social change: Small mobile bands increasingly developed villages, occupational differentiation, ritual practices, and unequal access to resources.
  • Environmental context: Climatic fluctuations, especially the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age, strongly influenced settlement, subsistence, and migration.
  • Regional variation: No single universal sequence applies everywhere; “Neolithic” may refer to food production in one region and settled life or pottery in another.

II. Palaeolithic cultures — adaptation, mobility, and the first technologies

A. Orientation

Palaeolithic cultures are societies associated primarily with hunting, gathering, fishing, scavenging, and the use of chipped-stone tools. The period is conventionally divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Palaeolithic phases, although their dates and archaeological features vary by region.

B. Palaeolithic cultures

Palaeolithic cultures demonstrate how early humans adapted to changing environments through technology, cooperation, and controlled use of natural resources.

  • Lower Palaeolithic: Beginning with early stone-tool industries such as Oldowan tools, dated to about 2.6 million years ago in East Africa, humans used simple cores and flakes for cutting and scraping.
    • Acheulean tradition: From about 1.7 million years ago, handaxes and cleavers became characteristic. Their bilateral shaping suggests planning and repeated technical procedures.
    • Fire: Evidence from sites such as Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in the Levant indicates controlled fire use by hundreds of thousands of years ago, supporting cooking, warmth, protection, and social gathering.
  • Middle Palaeolithic: Often associated with Neanderthals in Europe and western Asia and with Middle Stone Age populations in Africa.
    • Levallois technique: A prepared-core method produced flakes of predetermined shape, showing careful planning rather than random striking.
    • Subsistence: Hunting of large animals, gathering plant foods, and use of coastal or riverine resources created flexible economies.
    • Burial and care: Burials at sites such as Shanidar in Iraq have been interpreted as evidence of deliberate treatment of the dead and possible care for injured group members, though interpretations remain archaeological rather than textual.
  • Upper Palaeolithic: From roughly 50,000 BCE in many regions, blade tools, bone points, harpoons, needles, ornaments, and figurative art became more common.
    • Symbolic behaviour: Beads, ochre, engraved objects, and cave paintings at sites such as Chauvet and Lascaux indicate communication beyond immediate practical needs.
    • Hunting technology: Projectile points and spear-throwers increased range and effectiveness, while tailored clothing and needles supported occupation of cold regions.
  • Settlement pattern: Camps were generally mobile, but repeated occupation of caves, rockshelters, and open-air sites created substantial archaeological layers.
  • Social organisation: Cooperation was essential for hunting, childcare, food sharing, protection, and transmission of technical knowledge.
  • Historical significance: The Palaeolithic established the foundations of language, social learning, fire use, long-distance movement, and symbolic culture without producing agriculture or permanent villages.

C. Significance and limitations

Palaeolithic cultures reveal innovation within mobile societies, but archaeological remains cannot provide complete information about language, beliefs, or political organisation.

  • Cultural diversity: Acheulean handaxes, Middle Palaeolithic prepared-core tools, and Upper Palaeolithic blades represent different technological traditions rather than a simple ladder of progress.
  • Interpretive limit: A stone tool proves an activity such as cutting or scraping more securely than it proves a particular social belief.
  • Long-term importance: The period shows that complex cooperation and symbolism existed before farming, challenging the idea that settled agriculture alone created human culture.

III. Mesolithic cultures — transition after the Ice Age

A. Orientation

Mesolithic cultures developed during the transition from the Pleistocene to the warmer Holocene, beginning approximately after 10,000 BCE. They combined older hunting-and-gathering practices with new technologies, intensified use of local environments, and, in some regions, more settled seasonal life.

B. Mesolithic cultures

Mesolithic cultures were shaped by environmental warming, rising sea levels, expanding forests, and the diversification of available foods.

  • Microliths: Small, carefully shaped stone pieces, often geometric triangles or trapezes, were hafted into wood or bone to make composite arrows, sickles, and harpoons.
    • Concrete function: A series of microliths set into a shaft could create a cutting edge more easily repaired than a single large blade.
  • Diversified subsistence: Communities exploited fish, shellfish, birds, deer, wild cattle, nuts, berries, and edible roots instead of relying mainly on large Ice Age mammals.
  • Fishing and water resources: Bone points, fishhooks, nets, canoes, and shell middens indicate intensified use of rivers, lakes, and coasts.
  • Settlement: Seasonal camps became more substantial in resource-rich locations. Some groups returned repeatedly to the same sites, producing accumulation of hearths, tools, and food remains.
  • Burials and ritual: Cemeteries such as those at Vedbæk in Denmark show repeated formal burial practices, grave goods, and attention to the dead.
  • Regional examples: The Natufian communities of the Levant, dated broadly to 13,000–9,800 BCE, built semi-sedentary settlements and gathered wild cereals before the full development of agriculture.
  • Human-animal relationships: The early domestication of the dog is often associated with late Palaeolithic or Mesolithic contexts; dogs may have assisted hunting and altered social relationships.
  • Economic position: Mesolithic lifeways were not merely an incomplete stage before farming. They could be highly successful adaptations to forests, wetlands, coasts, and river valleys.

C. Significance and limitations

Mesolithic cultures are significant because they show that sedentary tendencies and resource intensification could precede agriculture.

  • Environmental adjustment: Warmer Holocene conditions changed animal habitats and plant availability, encouraging smaller-game hunting, fishing, and gathering.
  • Social flexibility: Mobility continued, but storage, repeated occupation, and cemeteries suggest stronger attachment to particular places.
  • Analytical caution: “Mesolithic” is a regional archaeological label; some societies used microliths without becoming sedentary, while others developed cultivation gradually.
  • Historical significance: The period forms a bridge between broad-spectrum foraging and food production, but the transition was uneven rather than universal or sudden.

IV. Neolithic cultures — food production and settled communities

A. Orientation

Neolithic cultures are associated with the adoption of agriculture, animal domestication, polished stone tools, pottery, storage, and permanent or semi-permanent settlements. The earliest well-known evidence comes from the Fertile Crescent after about 10,000 BCE, but independent or partly independent developments occurred elsewhere.

B. Neolithic cultures

Neolithic cultures transformed subsistence and settlement while creating new forms of labour, property, ritual, and social organisation.

  • Agriculture: Communities domesticated plants such as wheat, barley, peas, and lentils in southwest Asia; rice in parts of East and South Asia; millet in northern China; and maize in Mesoamerica.
    • Domestication indicators: Larger cereal grains, non-shattering seed heads, and changes in animal skeletons help archaeologists identify human selection.
  • Animal domestication: Sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle were domesticated in different regions. Herding provided meat, milk, hides, traction, and predictable supplies.
  • Ground and polished tools: Axes and adzes with polished edges were effective for clearing woodland and working timber. Grinding also produced smoother stone surfaces than earlier flaking.
  • Pottery and storage: Ceramic vessels preserved grain, liquids, and cooked foods. Storage increased the importance of planning, surplus management, and protection of accumulated goods.
  • Permanent settlements: Sites such as Jericho and Çatalhöyük contain mud-brick houses, floors, hearths, and repeated occupation. Dense settlement encouraged cooperation but also sanitation and conflict problems.
  • Architecture: Houses, walls, plastered floors, communal structures, and shrines indicate coordinated labour and shared ritual practices.
  • Social differentiation: Surplus could support craft specialists, leaders, ritual authorities, or exchange networks, although inequality varied greatly between settlements.
  • Population and disease: Reliable food supplies increased population in many areas, while sedentary life could also increase infectious disease, nutritional stress, and conflict.
  • Exchange: Obsidian, shells, pigments, and other materials travelled over long distances, demonstrating networks beyond individual villages.

C. Significance and limitations

The Neolithic was a major economic and social transformation, but it should not be treated simply as universal “progress.”

  • Food-production consequences: Agriculture supported larger populations and permanent settlements but required repetitive labour such as sowing, harvesting, grinding, and animal care.
  • Property and authority: Fields, herds, houses, and stored grain encouraged claims over resources and could produce unequal wealth.
  • Cultural variation: Some communities remained partly mobile, while others combined cultivation with hunting and gathering.
  • Historical significance: Neolithic cultures created the demographic and economic foundations from which later towns, craft specialisation, social hierarchy, and state formation could develop.

V. Chalcolithic cultures — copper, craft specialisation, and emerging complexity

A. Orientation

Chalcolithic cultures, or Copper-Stone Age cultures, combined established Neolithic technologies with the first regular use of copper. The term broadly covers the period between the Neolithic and Bronze Age, but dates differ widely: copper use appeared in parts of western Asia by the fifth millennium BCE and later in regions such as South Asia.

B. Chalcolithic cultures

Chalcolithic societies expanded production, exchange, metallurgy, and social differentiation without abandoning stone tools or village-based agriculture.

  • Copper metallurgy: Native copper could be cold-hammered, annealed, or smelted from ores such as malachite. Early copper tools were often softer than stone and therefore did not immediately replace stone implements.
    • Technological sequence: Mining or collecting ore, crushing, heating, melting, casting, hammering, and sharpening required specialised knowledge.
  • Mixed technology: Stone axes, blades, bone tools, and pottery continued alongside copper awls, beads, axes, and ornaments. The term “Copper-Stone” reflects this coexistence.
  • Agrarian economy: Farming and herding remained central, with cereals, pulses, cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs supporting village life. Irrigation appeared in some areas, but not everywhere.
  • Craft specialisation: Pottery became more standardised and sometimes painted or burnished. Specialist production indicates division of labour and possible control by households or elites.
  • Settlement patterns: Villages grew in size and complexity; some developed defensive walls, planned spaces, storage buildings, or central structures.
  • Exchange networks: Copper ore and finished objects moved through regional networks. Materials such as shells, stone, and semi-precious stones reveal expanding contact between communities.
  • Social differentiation: Differences in house size, burials, grave goods, and access to metal suggest emerging inequalities and status distinctions.
  • Regional examples: The South Asian Ahar-Banas and Malwa traditions used copper and distinctive pottery, while the Jorwe culture developed in the Deccan during the second millennium BCE. In western Asia, the Ubaid and later Uruk horizons show increasing settlement complexity and long-distance exchange.
  • Urban beginnings: In some regions, Chalcolithic developments contributed to the rise of towns and administrative systems, although full urbanism and bronze technology belonged to later phases.

C. Significance and limitations

Chalcolithic cultures mark a transition toward metallurgy, complex exchange, and social hierarchy, but copper alone did not create civilisation.

  • Economic impact: Metal objects could improve specialised tasks and display status, while agriculture and herding still supplied most food.
  • Political development: Storage, craft production, exchange, and unequal wealth created conditions for stronger leadership and institutional authority.
  • Continuity: Chalcolithic communities retained Neolithic village life, stone technology, and mixed economies; technological change was cumulative rather than revolutionary.
  • Historical significance: The period linked early food-producing settlements with Bronze Age societies by encouraging metallurgy, occupational specialisation, regional interaction, and increasingly complex social formations.
