The Harappan or Indus Valley Civilization was a Bronze Age urban civilization that flourished mainly between c. 2600 and 1900 BCE, with earlier roots and later transformations. It developed along the Indus and its tributaries, as well as in Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh.

  • Chronological framework: The Early Harappan phase is generally dated c. 3300–2600 BCE, the Mature Harappan phase c. 2600–1900 BCE, and the Late Harappan phase c. 1900–1300 BCE.

The civilization emerged from earlier settled farming communities and expanded into a large interconnected zone rather than appearing suddenly as a fully urban society.

  • Harappa: Located on the Ravi River in Punjab, it had citadel areas, residential zones, craft activity, granary-like structures, and cemeteries.
  • Mohenjo-daro: Situated in Sindh near the Indus, it is famous for the Great Bath, extensive drainage, streets, wells, and dense brick architecture.
  • Dholavira: Located on Khadir Island in the Rann of Kachchh, it possessed three walled divisions, large reservoirs, and a sophisticated water-management system.
  • Lothal: A settlement in Gujarat associated with bead-making, maritime trade, warehouses, and a basin often interpreted as a dockyard.
  • Kalibangan: In Rajasthan, it shows fortified settlements, planned streets, fire installations, and evidence of a ploughed field.
  • Rakhigarhi: In Haryana, it is one of the largest Harappan sites and demonstrates major settlement growth in the Ghaggar-Hakra region.
  • Banawali: Also in Haryana, it displays both Early and Mature Harappan occupation and distinctive fortification and street planning.

IV. Town planning — principles of urban organization

Harappan town planning emphasized order, sanitation, water control, and the repeated use of standardized construction methods.

A. Town planning

The layout of many settlements shows deliberate planning, although local geography produced important variations.

  • Street arrangement: Streets often followed a grid pattern, with major roads intersected by narrower lanes at approximately right angles.
  • Division of space: Many cities had a raised, fortified western sector commonly called the citadel and a larger lower town; this division was not identical everywhere.
  • Drainage: Covered brick drains ran beside streets, with inspection points and soakage arrangements to remove wastewater from houses.
  • House connections: Some houses had bathing platforms and drains linked to street drains, indicating attention to household sanitation.
  • Standardization: Bricks commonly followed a ratio close to 1:2:4 for thickness, width, and length, facilitating uniform construction.
  • Water supply: Mohenjo-daro contained numerous wells, while Dholavira relied strongly on reservoirs and channels.
  • Civic control: The scale of streets, walls, drains, and reservoirs implies collective labour and organized authority, though no palace or royal monument has been securely identified.

V. Society — social organization and everyday life

Harappan society was urban, occupationally specialized, and regionally diverse, but its exact political hierarchy remains uncertain because the script cannot be read.

Archaeological remains indicate differences in occupation and access to resources without providing a clear picture of kingship.

  • Social differentiation: Variations in house size, burial goods, ornaments, and craft access suggest unequal status, though differences were generally less visibly monumental than in Egypt or Mesopotamia.
  • Occupational groups: Farmers, herders, potters, bead-makers, metalworkers, builders, traders, and administrators likely supported urban life.
  • Household structure: Houses commonly had courtyards, rooms, bathrooms, and storage areas, suggesting households organized around domestic production.
  • Gender evidence: Figurines and burials cannot reliably prove a “mother-goddess” religion or fixed gender roles; interpretations must remain cautious.
  • Food and health: Wheat, barley, pulses, sesame, dates, and cattle, sheep, goats, and fish contributed to diet, with regional variation.
  • Mortuary practices: Extended burials, pottery, ornaments, and occasional animal remains occur, but there is no uniform burial system across all sites.
  • Political organization: Standardization over a huge region suggests coordination, yet the absence of obvious palaces, royal tombs, or large armies prevents a definite model of centralized monarchy.

VI. Economy — agriculture, craft production, and exchange

The Harappan economy combined food production with specialized crafts, internal redistribution, and long-distance trade.

Agricultural surplus and exchange enabled cities to support non-farming populations and large public works.

  • Agriculture: Wheat and barley were major crops; peas, sesame, dates, cotton, and millets were also cultivated in different regions.
  • Irrigation and water use: Farmers depended on seasonal floods, wells, reservoirs, and local water-control techniques rather than one uniform irrigation system.
  • Animal husbandry: Cattle were especially important for traction and food; buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, and camels were also used.
  • Craft specialization: Chanhudaro and Lothal were notable for bead production; faience, shell, pottery, copper-bronze tools, and ornaments were widely manufactured.
  • Raw materials: Copper came partly from Rajasthan and Oman; lapis lazuli was obtained through Afghan routes; shell came from coastal areas.
  • Weights and measures: Cubical stone weights followed standardized numerical progressions, supporting regulated exchange and accounting.
  • Trade networks: Mesopotamian texts refer to a region called Meluhha, probably connected with the Indus world; seals and Harappan goods reached sites in the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamia.
  • Transport: Bullock carts, river routes, and coastal shipping probably connected cities and production zones.

VII. Architecture — buildings, materials, and public works

Harappan architecture was practical and standardized, combining mud brick, baked brick, stone, timber, and carefully planned hydraulic structures.

Buildings generally served domestic, civic, defensive, storage, or craft-related purposes rather than displaying monumental royal power.

  • Building materials: Baked bricks were especially common at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, while stone was more extensively used at Dholavira.
  • Domestic design: Houses often opened inward onto courtyards, limiting direct street access and providing light, ventilation, and work space.
  • Great Bath: At Mohenjo-daro, the Great Bath was a brick-lined, bitumen-sealed tank measuring approximately 12 by 7 metres; its exact ritual or civic purpose is unknown.
  • Large structures: Buildings interpreted as granaries, warehouses, assembly halls, or administrative spaces show organized storage and communal activity, but their functions remain debated.
  • Fortifications: Massive walls at sites such as Dholavira and Kalibangan may have provided defence, flood protection, or symbolic separation.
  • Hydraulic architecture: Dholavira’s reservoirs, channels, and retaining walls demonstrate adaptation to a semi-arid environment.
  • Absence of monuments: No securely identified temple, palace, or royal tomb dominates the cities, suggesting a different relationship between authority and architecture.

VIII. Harappan script — signs, seals, and undeciphered writing

The Harappan script is a system of approximately 400 basic signs, used mainly for short inscriptions on seals, pottery, tablets, and metal objects.

The script probably communicated administrative, commercial, or personal information, but its language and full meaning remain unknown.

  • Direction of writing: Many inscriptions appear to run from right to left, inferred partly from the arrangement and compression of signs.
  • Typical length: Most inscriptions are very short, often fewer than ten signs, which limits grammatical analysis.
  • Writing materials: Steatite seals, copper tablets, pottery fragments, ivory objects, and terracotta pieces preserve examples.
  • Seals: A common seal shows an animal motif, such as a so-called unicorn, with signs above it; seals may have marked goods, people, or institutions.
  • Sign variation: The sign inventory is too extensive for a simple alphabet but too limited for a large logographic system; it may have combined word and sound signs.
  • Decipherment problem: No long bilingual inscription comparable to the Rosetta Stone has been found, and the underlying language is uncertain.
  • Interpretive caution: Claims that particular signs definitively represent gods, rulers, or specific words remain unproven.

IX. Indus script — evidence and historical significance

The Indus script provides a valuable but limited window into Harappan administration and identity.

X. Causes of decline of Harappan civilization — transformation after 1900 BCE

The decline was a gradual process of urban contraction and regional reorganization rather than a single catastrophe affecting every settlement simultaneously.

A. Causes of decline of Harappan civilization

Multiple environmental, economic, and social factors probably weakened the Mature Harappan urban system after c. 1900 BCE.

  • Climate change: Increasing aridity may have reduced water availability and weakened agricultural productivity, especially in already dry regions.
  • River changes: Shifts in the courses of the Indus, Ghaggar-Hakra, and other rivers could have disrupted irrigation, transport, and settlement stability.
  • Flooding: Repeated flood deposits at Mohenjo-daro suggest episodes of serious inundation, although flooding cannot explain decline everywhere.
  • Trade disruption: Reduced contact with Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf may have affected specialized urban crafts and access to imported raw materials.
  • Agricultural pressure: Population concentration, soil stress, deforestation, and changing rainfall may have made intensive urban provisioning difficult.
  • Urban fragmentation: After c. 1900 BCE, standardized weights, seals, writing, and large civic constructions became less common, while smaller regional settlements expanded.
  • Migration and adaptation: Populations probably moved toward the Ganges-Yamuna region, Gujarat, and other zones, carrying selected Harappan technologies and traditions.
  • Rejected single-cause explanation: The decline is not adequately explained by a simple invasion theory; archaeological evidence points to complex regional transformation rather than one decisive event.
  • Continuity: Harappan cultural elements survived in pottery, agricultural practices, crafts, settlement traditions, and later regional cultures, showing transformation rather than total disappearance.
