I. Orientation — The study of directed action and felt experience

Motivation and emotion are complementary psychological processes. Motivation explains why behaviour is initiated, directed, and sustained, whereas emotion involves coordinated feelings, bodily changes, thoughts, and action tendencies. Modern psychology treats both as interactions among biological needs, learning, cognition, social context, and environmental conditions rather than as single causes of behaviour.

A. Meaning, definition and nature of motivation and emotion

This subsection establishes the basic concepts that guide the study of motivated and emotional behaviour.

  • Motivation: Motivation is the process that arouses, directs, and maintains behaviour toward a goal.
    • Arousal: It energises action, such as hunger producing food-seeking.
    • Direction: It selects one response over another, such as choosing study rather than entertainment.
    • Persistence: It sustains effort despite delay or difficulty, such as continuing revision before an examination.
  • Emotion: Emotion is a relatively brief, organised response to a significant event or situation, involving subjective feeling, physiological arousal, appraisal, and expression.
    • Feeling: The conscious experience, such as fear or joy.
    • Arousal: Bodily activity, such as increased heart rate during danger.
    • Appraisal: Interpretation of what an event means for personal goals.
    • Expression and action tendency: Observable or behavioural readiness, such as fleeing when afraid.
  • Nature of both processes: Motivation and emotion are dynamic, goal-related, and influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors.
  • Defining characteristics: Behaviour may have several motives; the same motive may produce different behaviours; and emotional responses vary according to interpretation and culture.
  • Governing relationship: Motives often generate action, while emotions provide information about progress, threat, loss, reward, or social connection.

II. Motivation — Energising and directing behaviour

Motivation is inferred from behaviour, persistence, choice, and performance. It does not refer only to conscious intention: physiological regulation, rewards, habits, and unconscious processes can also energise action.

A. Meaning, definition and nature of motivation and emotion

Motivation is best understood as a process linking internal conditions and external incentives to goal-directed behaviour.

  • Internal conditions: Needs such as hunger, affiliation, achievement, or competence create pressure for action.
  • External conditions: Incentives such as money, praise, grades, or social approval attract behaviour.
  • Goal orientation: A motive can direct behaviour toward a desired outcome or away from an unwanted outcome.
  • Activation and inhibition: Motivation may increase a response, such as approaching food, or suppress one, such as resisting an impulse.
  • Conscious and non-conscious operation: A student may consciously aim for a high grade while also being influenced by learned approval-seeking.
  • Approach–avoidance pattern: Positive outcomes tend to produce approach behaviour; threatening or unpleasant outcomes tend to produce avoidance.
  • Homeostatic function: Some motives restore internal balance. For example, thirst promotes drinking when bodily fluid balance is disturbed.
  • Non-homeostatic function: Achievement and curiosity do not simply correct a bodily deficit; they promote growth, exploration, and mastery.

B. Types of motivation

Types of motivation are commonly distinguished by their source, purpose, and relationship to rewards or personal values.

  • Biological or primary motivation: These motives arise from bodily requirements and support survival.
    • Examples: Hunger, thirst, sleep, temperature regulation, and sexual motivation.
    • Mechanism: A physiological deficit creates tension, and behaviour reduces that tension.
  • Psychological or secondary motivation: These motives develop through learning and social experience.
    • Examples: Achievement, affiliation, power, approval, and status.
    • Concrete indicator: A learner may practise mathematics for competence even when no immediate biological need is present.
  • Intrinsic motivation: Behaviour is performed for inherent interest, satisfaction, enjoyment, or mastery.
    • Example: Reading about astronomy because understanding the subject is rewarding in itself.
    • Effect: It commonly supports persistence, creativity, and deeper learning.
  • Extrinsic motivation: Behaviour is performed to obtain an external reward or avoid punishment.
    • Example: Completing an assignment to receive marks or avoid a penalty.
    • Caution: External rewards may strengthen performance, but excessive control can reduce intrinsic interest.
  • Approach motivation: Behaviour is directed toward a positive or desired outcome, such as applying for a scholarship.
  • Avoidance motivation: Behaviour is directed away from an aversive outcome, such as avoiding failure or social rejection.
  • Achievement motivation: The individual seeks competence, excellence, or successful performance against a standard.
    • Atkinson’s formulation: Achievement behaviour depends on the motive for success, perceived probability of success, and incentive value of success.
  • Self-determination perspective: Motivation is strengthened when autonomy, competence, and relatedness are supported.
    • Autonomy: Experiencing choice and volition.
    • Competence: Feeling effective in dealing with tasks.
    • Relatedness: Feeling connected to others.

C. Theoretical explanations and measurement

Theories of motivation explain where motives originate and how they influence behaviour.

  • Instinct theory: Behaviour may reflect inherited, species-typical patterns; however, it cannot adequately explain flexible human actions shaped by culture and learning.
  • Drive-reduction theory: A biological deficit creates a drive, behaviour reduces the drive, and internal balance is restored.
    • Formula:

    • Symbols: “Need” is a physiological deficit; “drive” is the psychological tension produced by it.
  • Incentive theory: External rewards and punishments pull or push behaviour, even when no biological deficit exists.
  • Arousal theory: People seek an optimal level of stimulation; boredom encourages activity, while excessive stimulation encourages withdrawal.
  • Expectancy–value approach: Effort increases when a person expects success and values the outcome.

    • Symbols: Expectancy is the perceived likelihood of success; value is the importance or attractiveness of the outcome.
  • Measurement: Motivation is assessed through choice, effort, persistence, performance, self-report, physiological indicators, and goal attainment; no single measure captures the complete process.

III. Emotion — Coordinated feeling, appraisal, and action

Emotion is a multi-component process rather than merely a feeling. A stimulus becomes emotionally significant through appraisal, produces bodily changes, and prepares the person for action.

A. Meaning, definition and nature of motivation and emotion

Emotion involves an organised response to events that matter for survival, goals, relationships, or personal identity.

  • Stimulus or situation: The trigger may be external, such as a loud noise, or internal, such as remembering a loss.
  • Cognitive appraisal: The person evaluates whether the event is beneficial, harmful, controllable, expected, or relevant to a goal.
  • Physiological response: The autonomic nervous system may alter heart rate, breathing, sweating, digestion, and muscle readiness.
  • Subjective experience: The person consciously labels the state as anger, fear, sadness, joy, or another emotion.
  • Expression: Facial movement, posture, voice, and action communicate emotional significance.
  • Short-term organisation: Emotions rapidly coordinate perception, attention, memory, and action.
  • Adaptation and possible cost: Fear can promote safety, but chronic anxiety can impair concentration and wellbeing.
  • Emotion versus mood: An emotion is usually more intense and linked to a recognisable event; a mood is more diffuse, longer-lasting, and may lack a clear trigger.

B. Types and classification of emotions

Emotions can be classified according to evolutionary function, pleasantness, arousal, and complexity.

  • Primary or basic emotions: These are widely recognised states with characteristic expressions and action tendencies.
    • Common examples: Happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust.
    • Function: Fear promotes escape, anger supports overcoming obstruction, disgust assists rejection of contamination, and sadness can elicit support.
  • Positive emotions: These include joy, interest, gratitude, love, and contentment.
    • Function: They broaden attention, encourage exploration, strengthen relationships, and build psychological resources.
  • Negative emotions: These include fear, anger, guilt, shame, sadness, and disgust.
    • Function: Although unpleasant, they can signal danger, wrongdoing, loss, contamination, or blocked goals.
  • Self-conscious emotions: Shame, guilt, pride, and embarrassment require awareness of the self and social standards.
    • Example: Guilt may follow judging one’s action as harmful, whereas shame often involves a negative evaluation of the whole self.
  • High- and low-arousal emotions: Excitement and panic are high-arousal states; calmness and sadness generally involve lower activation, though sadness can vary in intensity.
  • Dimensional classification: Emotional states can be represented by at least two dimensions:
    • Valence: Pleasantness versus unpleasantness.
    • Arousal: Activation versus deactivation.
  • Mixed emotions: A person may experience pride and anxiety together before presenting a difficult project; categories are therefore useful descriptions, not rigid compartments.
  • Cultural influence: Cultures shape display rules, emotional vocabulary, acceptable expression, and interpretation, although some basic emotional signals appear widely shared.

C. Major approaches to emotion

Different theories emphasise bodily feedback, simultaneous processing, or cognitive interpretation.

  • James–Lange theory: An event produces bodily changes, and perception of those changes becomes the emotional experience.
    • Sequence: Event → physiological arousal → experienced emotion.
  • Cannon–Bard theory: The emotional experience and physiological arousal occur simultaneously after the emotional stimulus is processed.
    • Sequence: Event → emotion + physiological arousal.
  • Two-factor theory: Emotion results from physiological arousal plus a cognitive label based on situational context.
    • Sequence: Arousal + interpretation → emotion.
    • Example: The same rapid heartbeat may be labelled excitement on a roller coaster or fear in a dangerous alley.
  • Cognitive appraisal approach: Emotion depends on evaluations of relevance, agency, coping ability, and consequences; different appraisals of the same event can produce different emotions.
  • Facial-feedback view: Facial and bodily actions may influence emotional experience, but feedback is generally one contributor rather than the sole cause.
  • Emotion regulation: People may alter emotional responses through situation selection, attention, reappraisal, expression, or response suppression.
    • Reappraisal: Interpreting an examination as a challenge rather than only a threat can reduce anxiety and preserve performance.

IV. Motivational conflicts — Competing goals and choices

Motivational conflict occurs when two or more motives or goals cannot be satisfied simultaneously, producing hesitation, stress, or a difficult choice.

A. Motivational conflicts

Conflicts are classified by whether the competing alternatives are attractive, unattractive, or mixed in value.

  • Approach–approach conflict: The individual must choose between two desirable goals.
    • Example: Selecting either a paid internship or an appealing academic workshop scheduled at the same time.
    • Typical pattern: Decision-making is often relatively easy because both alternatives have positive value.
  • Avoidance–avoidance conflict: The individual must choose between two undesirable outcomes.
    • Example: Completing a difficult assignment or accepting a failing grade.
    • Typical pattern: The person may delay, withdraw, or seek a third alternative.
  • Approach–avoidance conflict: One goal has both attractive and unattractive features.
    • Example: Applying for a prestigious job that offers status and income but requires relocation.
    • Typical pattern: As the person approaches the goal, its negative aspects may become more psychologically powerful, producing hesitation.
  • Multiple approach–avoidance conflict: Several alternatives each contain both positive and negative features.
    • Example: Choosing among universities that differ in cost, reputation, location, and course quality.
    • Typical pattern: Decisions require comparing the total pattern of expected benefits and costs.
  • Goal incompatibility: Conflict can arise when a short-term motive competes with a long-term aim, such as spending money now versus saving for education.
  • Strength of motives: Conflict intensity depends on the value, probability, immediacy, and personal meaning of each outcome.
  • Gradient principle: The tendency to approach a desired goal often strengthens as the goal becomes nearer; avoidance may also intensify near a feared outcome. In approach–avoidance conflict, these opposing gradients can produce oscillation.
  • Cognitive dissonance: After choosing, inconsistency between behaviour and beliefs may create discomfort, encouraging justification, attitude change, or reconsideration.
  • Resolution strategies: Clarifying priorities, gathering information, estimating consequences, delaying impulsive action, and dividing a large decision into smaller choices can reduce conflict.
  • Limitations of classification: Real decisions are affected by emotion, uncertainty, social pressure, habits, and changing circumstances; therefore, the categories describe patterns rather than mechanically predicting every choice.
