I. Orientation

The Harappan civilization, also called the Indus Valley Civilization, was the earliest urban civilization of the Indian subcontinent. It developed mainly in the Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra river systems and reached its mature urban phase around 2600–1900 BCE. Its settlements extended across present-day Pakistan and northwestern India, with related sites reaching into Afghanistan and Gujarat.

  • Civilizational character: It was a Bronze Age civilization known for planned cities, craft production, long-distance trade, standardized weights, seals, and undeciphered writing.
  • Main phases: The broad sequence is Early/Pre-Harappan, Mature Harappan, and Late Harappan.
    • Early phase: c. 7000–2600 BCE in some regions, including early farming communities such as Mehrgarh.
    • Mature phase: c. 2600–1900 BCE, marked by large towns and shared cultural features.
    • Late phase: c. 1900–1300 BCE, marked by urban decline and regionalization.
  • Material basis: Harappan society used copper and bronze but did not generally use iron; agriculture, pastoralism, craft specialization, and trade supported urban life.

II. Date and extent of Harappa civilization — Chronology and geographical spread

The Harappa civilization is best understood as a long cultural process rather than a single brief kingdom. Its most developed urban form belongs to the Mature Harappan period, approximately 2600–1900 BCE.

A. Date and extent of Harappa civilization

The dates and geographical limits of the civilization are established through archaeological layers, radiocarbon dating, pottery styles, seals, architecture, and shared systems of measurement.

  • Chronological framework: The civilization is conventionally divided into three major stages:
    • Early Harappan, c. 3300–2600 BCE: Regional farming and craft communities gradually developed fortified settlements, distinctive pottery, and more organized exchange.
    • Mature Harappan, c. 2600–1900 BCE: Large urban centers such as Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira, and Ganweriwala flourished.
    • Late Harappan, c. 1900–1300 BCE: Major cities declined, while smaller settlements and regional cultural traditions continued.
  • Earliest agricultural background: Mehrgarh in Balochistan provides evidence of farming and settled life from about the seventh millennium BCE, including wheat, barley, mud-brick structures, and domesticated animals.
  • Geographical extent: The civilization covered roughly 1.3 million square kilometres, making it one of the largest Bronze Age cultural zones.
    • Western limit: Sutkagen-dor near the Makran coast of present-day Pakistan.
    • Northern limit: Shortugai in northern Afghanistan, associated with trade and access to lapis lazuli.
    • Eastern limit: Alamgirpur in western Uttar Pradesh.
    • Southern limit: Daimabad in Maharashtra, though its Harappan connections and chronology are more complex.
  • Core region: The principal concentration lay in Sindh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
  • Major settlements: Harappa in Punjab, Mohenjo-daro in Sindh, Dholavira in Kutch, Rakhigarhi in Haryana, Kalibangan in Rajasthan, Lothal in Gujarat, and Banawali in Haryana.
  • Uneven settlement pattern: Not all sites were equally urban. Large cities coexisted with villages, craft centers, agricultural settlements, pastoral zones, and trading outposts.
  • Cultural unity: Common features included standardized bricks, weights, seals, pottery forms, script signs, ornaments, and urban drainage. This unity existed alongside regional variations in architecture, subsistence, and burial customs.

III. Town planning and architecture — Urban organization and built environment

Harappan town planning reflects careful organization of space, water, drainage, construction materials, and public or domestic activities. Its purpose was practical, although the exact political authority behind the plans remains unknown.

A. Town planning and architecture

Harappan cities were generally built according to regular layouts, with strong attention to brick construction, drainage, storage, water management, and separation of functional areas.

  • Planned settlement structure: Many cities had a raised, fortified western sector often called the “citadel” and a larger lower town to the east.
    • Citadel: Frequently contained important public structures, platforms, reservoirs, or assembly-related buildings.
    • Lower town: Included residential areas, workshops, streets, wells, and drains.
  • Street layout: Streets commonly followed a grid-like arrangement, with major roads intersected by smaller lanes. At Mohenjo-daro, streets were laid out with considerable regularity, although the plan was not perfectly uniform everywhere.
  • Standardized bricks: Baked bricks often followed a ratio close to 1:2:4 for thickness, width, and length. This standardization facilitated strong walls, drains, wells, and platforms across widely separated settlements.
  • Drainage system: Houses often had bathing areas connected to covered street drains.
    • Construction: Drains were made of baked brick and sometimes included inspection or cleaning points.
    • Significance: The system shows concern with wastewater removal and neighborhood-level maintenance, not necessarily modern public sanitation.
  • Water management: Wells, reservoirs, tanks, and channels were important, especially in settlements with uncertain seasonal water supplies.
    • Mohenjo-daro: Numerous private and public wells have been excavated.
    • Dholavira: The city had sophisticated reservoirs and channels adapted to an arid environment.
  • Domestic architecture: Houses were usually constructed around a central courtyard, with rooms opening inward. Many had bathrooms, drains, stairways, and sometimes private wells.
    • Privacy: Limited street-facing openings and inward-oriented plans suggest a concern with controlling access and household space.
    • Variation: House sizes differed, indicating unequal wealth or status, but no unmistakable royal palace has been identified.
  • Public buildings: Important structures include the Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro, large platforms, possible granary-like buildings at Harappa, and reservoirs at Dholavira.
    • Great Bath: A brick-lined tank, approximately 12 metres long and 7 metres wide, was supplied and drained through engineered arrangements. Its exact ritual or civic use is uncertain.
    • Lothal: A large basin traditionally identified as a dockyard reflects the site’s connection with maritime or waterborne trade, though its precise function remains debated.
  • Fortifications: Walls and raised platforms occur at several settlements. They may have served defensive, flood-control, administrative, or symbolic purposes rather than indicating constant warfare.
  • Craft areas: Evidence of bead-making, shell-working, metallurgy, pottery, and faience production shows that urban architecture included specialized economic zones.
  • Religious architecture: Unlike Mesopotamia, the Harappan cities have not yielded clearly identifiable monumental temples or royal tombs. This limits confident reconstruction of their political and religious systems.

IV. Indus script — Writing, signs, and interpretation

The Indus script is a system of approximately several hundred recurring signs found mainly on seals, pottery, tablets, metal objects, and other materials. Because it has not been securely deciphered, interpretations must rely on its archaeological contexts and formal patterns.

A. Indus script

The script appears to have recorded information connected with identity, property, administration, trade, or ritual, but its language and precise function remain unknown.

  • Sources of writing: The most common examples occur on square steatite seals, especially those showing an animal and a short line of signs.
    • Seal imagery: The so-called “unicorn” motif is especially frequent; other animals include elephants, rhinoceroses, bulls, and composite creatures.
    • Other objects: Signs appear on pottery, copper tablets, ivory pieces, bangles, tools, and larger inscriptions at sites such as Dholavira.
  • Number of signs: Scholars identify roughly 400–600 signs, depending on whether graphic variations are counted separately. Only a smaller group occurs frequently.
  • Direction of writing: Many inscriptions seem to run from right to left, inferred from the positioning and compression of signs, although the evidence is not completely uniform.
  • Inscription length: Texts are usually extremely short, often fewer than ten signs. The lack of long bilingual inscriptions makes decipherment especially difficult.
  • Possible functions:
    • Administrative identification: Seals may have marked goods, containers, merchants, offices, or institutional ownership.
    • Social identity: Repeated sign groups may represent names, titles, groups, or places.
    • Ritual communication: Some inscriptions may have had religious or ceremonial significance.
  • Relationship to trade: Indus seals and sealings have been found beyond the core region, including at sites connected with Mesopotamian exchange. Mesopotamian texts refer to a land called Meluhha, often associated with the Indus region, though the identification is not absolutely certain.
  • Material context: The script’s presence on durable objects does not prove that writing was used for everyday administration in the same way as Mesopotamian cuneiform.
  • Decipherment problem: No accepted reading exists because:
    • The underlying language is unknown.
    • The inscriptions are short.
    • There is no securely identified bilingual text.
    • Sign sequences may combine writing with symbols or emblematic marks.
  • Historical value: Even without decipherment, the script demonstrates shared cultural conventions and the importance of standardized communication across distant settlements.

V. Causes of decline — Transformation after c. 1900 BCE

The decline of Harappan urbanism was a gradual and regionally varied transformation rather than a single event. After about 1900 BCE, major cities lost population and standardized material culture weakened, but Harappan traditions continued in new forms.

A. Causes of decline

The most persuasive explanation combines environmental stress, changing river systems, economic disruption, and social reorganization rather than relying on one invasion or catastrophe.

  • Environmental change: Shifts in rainfall and weakening monsoons may have reduced agricultural reliability after c. 2000 BCE.
    • Agricultural effect: Lower water availability could have affected wheat and barley production in some regions.
    • Regional variation: Gujarat and parts of eastern regions followed different trajectories, showing that climate did not affect every settlement equally.
  • River changes: Changes in the courses, flow, or seasonal behavior of rivers may have undermined settlements dependent on stable water supplies.
    • Ghaggar-Hakra region: The drying or reduction of river channels has been proposed as one factor in the abandonment or relocation of settlements, though the precise timing and causes remain debated.
    • Flooding: At Mohenjo-daro, repeated flood deposits and rebuilding suggest that excessive water, not only drought, could damage urban life.
  • Soil and resource pressure: Intensive cultivation, deforestation, salinization, and overuse of local resources may have reduced the productivity of some urban environments.
  • Economic change: Long-distance trade with regions such as Mesopotamia declined during the same broad period. Reduced external exchange may have weakened specialized craft production and urban redistribution.
    • Craft evidence: Large-scale production of seals, beads, and other goods became less concentrated after 1900 BCE.
  • Urban administrative breakdown: The disappearance or weakening of standardized weights, bricks, seals, and city layouts indicates that institutions coordinating large territories became less effective.
  • Disease and demographic stress: Dense settlements may have faced health pressures, but direct evidence is limited and cannot alone explain the transformation.
  • Invasion theory: Earlier scholars attributed the decline to invading Indo-Aryans, partly on the basis of skeletal remains and references in later texts.
    • Assessment: Archaeological evidence does not demonstrate a single large-scale invasion destroying the cities. The skeletal evidence is ambiguous, and the decline was neither simultaneous nor uniformly violent.
  • Regionalization: After 1900 BCE, populations shifted toward smaller settlements in the Ganges-Yamuna region, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Local pottery traditions and subsistence patterns became more prominent.
  • Continuity: The end of Mature Harappan cities did not mean the disappearance of the population or culture.
    • Surviving practices: Craft skills, agricultural traditions, ceramic forms, religious symbols, settlement habits, and some technological knowledge continued.
    • Historical significance: The decline marks the end of a particular urban system, not the end of cultural development in the northwestern subcontinent.
