I. Orientation — society, ecology, and sustainability
Human communities depend on ecological systems for food, water, energy, shelter, and livelihoods, while their activities also reshape those systems. Environmental studies therefore examines the two-way relationship between human welfare and environmental limits, especially through the principles of sustainability, equity, participation, and conservation.
- Sustainability: Meeting present needs without destroying the ecological capacity available to future generations.
- Carrying capacity: The population size and level of resource use that an environment can support over time.
- Interdependence: Human health, economy, culture, and security are linked to air, water, soil, biodiversity, and climate.
- Environmental justice: Environmental benefits and burdens should be distributed fairly, including across class, caste, gender, tribal communities, and generations.
- Participation: Conservation is more durable when affected communities help define problems, decisions, and solutions.
II. Human population growth — demographic change and resource pressure
Human population growth is the increase in the number of people in a region or worldwide over time. It depends on births, deaths, immigration, and emigration; rapid growth generally occurs when death rates decline faster than birth rates.

- Growth factors: Population change can be represented as births − deaths + immigration − emigration; improvements in sanitation, medicine, and food supply reduce mortality.

Human health and welfare include physical, mental, social, and economic well-being. Environmental quality is a public-health foundation rather than a separate concern.

Cultural practices for environmental conservation are beliefs, institutions, technologies, and customs that regulate human use of nature.

Many traditions conserve resources by attaching social, religious, or livelihood value to ecosystems.
- Sacred groves: Forest patches protected by customary rules often preserve old trees, medicinal plants, birds, insects, and water sources.
- Seasonal restrictions: Community bans on hunting, fishing, or collection during breeding seasons allow populations to regenerate.
- Water traditions: Tank systems, johads, stepwells, and community-managed ponds store monsoon water and reduce drought vulnerability.
- Sustainable use: Mixed cropping, seed preservation, rotational grazing, and use of local materials can reduce dependence on single resources.
- Limitations: Tradition is not automatically sustainable; practices must adapt when population, markets, technology, or climate conditions change.
VII. Tribal populations and environmental conservation — custodianship and rights
Tribal populations often possess detailed knowledge of forests, soils, wildlife, medicinal plants, and seasonal cycles. Their relationship with nature is commonly livelihood-based rather than purely commercial.

VIII. Environmental laws in India — constitutional and statutory framework
Indian environmental law combines constitutional duties, legislation, judicial interpretation, regulatory institutions, and principles such as sustainable development.

These laws regulate pollution, forests, wildlife, environmental impact, and public participation.
- Constitutional basis: Article 48A directs the State to protect the environment; Article 51A(g) places a fundamental duty on citizens to protect forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife.
- Water Act, 1974: Controls water pollution through pollution-control boards and consent requirements for discharges.
- Air Act, 1981: Provides regulation of emissions and declares air-pollution control areas.
- Environment Protection Act, 1986: An umbrella law empowering the Central Government to set standards and regulate hazardous substances and activities.
- Forest Conservation Act, 1980: Restricts diversion of forest land for non-forest purposes without central approval; it was renamed the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam in 2023.
- Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Protects listed species and provides for national parks, sanctuaries, and other protected areas.
- Environmental Impact Assessment: The 2006 notification requires prior environmental clearance for specified projects, with appraisal and, where applicable, public consultation.
- National Green Tribunal: Established in 2010 for specialized and relatively speedy resolution of substantial environmental disputes.
IX. Bishnois of Rajasthan — community-based protection
The Bishnoi tradition in Rajasthan links religious discipline with protection of living beings, especially khejri trees and wildlife.

Bishnoi conservation demonstrates how ethical values can become community enforcement.
- Historical origin: Guru Jambheshwar, known as Jambhoji, established 29 principles in the fifteenth century, including protection of trees and animals.
- Khejarli sacrifice: In 1730, Amrita Devi and many Bishnois resisted tree felling by embracing khejri trees; hundreds were killed.
- Ecological value: Khejri supports fodder, soil fertility, shade, and desert livelihoods, making protection directly connected to survival.
- Wildlife protection: Bishnoi communities traditionally protect blackbuck, chinkara, peafowl, and other animals from hunting.
- Significance: The example shows that conservation can be enforced through identity, moral duty, customary law, and collective action.
X. Chipko movement — forests, livelihoods, and non-violent resistance
The Chipko movement was a non-violent forest-protection movement in the Himalayan region, especially present-day Uttarakhand, during the 1970s.
A. Chipko movement
Villagers resisted commercial felling by physically embracing trees, making their bodies a barrier against axes.
- Participants: Women such as Gaura Devi and activists including Chandi Prasad Bhatt and Sunderlal Bahuguna helped mobilize communities.
- Local issue: Forest loss threatened fuelwood, fodder, water regulation, soil stability, and agriculture.
- Method: Non-violent direct action, village meetings, songs, and tree protection connected ecological concerns with livelihood rights.
- Outcome: The movement contributed to restrictions on commercial green felling in Himalayan forests, including a central ban on green felling in parts of the Himalayan region in 1980.
- Significance: It broadened conservation from timber protection to community welfare and ecological stability.
XI. Appiko movement — southern Indian forest protection
The Appiko movement began in Karnataka in 1983 and adapted Chipko-style tree-hugging to the Western Ghats.

The movement opposed destructive forestry and promoted ecological restoration and rational resource use.
- Leadership: Activist Pandurang Hegde helped organize the campaign in the Uttara Kannada region.
- Three demands: Save existing forests, grow new trees, and use forest resources rationally.
- Threats: Clear-felling, monoculture plantations, commercial extraction, and developmental projects affected biodiversity and village livelihoods.
- Methods: Marches, public education, demonstrations, and direct protection of trees communicated the ecological value of native forests.
- Significance: Appiko linked biodiversity, soil and water conservation, and sustainable local use in the Western Ghats.
XII. Jungle Bachao Andolan — resistance to commercial forestry
The Jungle Bachao Andolan emerged in the 1980s in Singhbhum, then Bihar, now largely Jharkhand, against replacement of natural forests by commercial teak plantations.

The movement challenged the assumption that a plantation of one commercially valuable species is equivalent to a natural forest.
- Affected communities: Adivasi communities depended on diverse forests for food, fuel, fodder, medicines, and cultural practices.
- Core conflict: Natural sal forests were threatened by conversion to teak, which served commercial interests but reduced ecological and livelihood diversity.
- Environmental point: A monoculture plantation generally has lower habitat complexity and fewer non-timber products than a mixed native forest.
- Political meaning: The movement asserted community rights and questioned centralized forest management.
- Significance: It emphasized that “forest” must be understood as a living ecosystem, not merely standing timber.
XIII. Silent Valley movement — protecting tropical rainforest
The Silent Valley movement opposed a proposed hydroelectric project in Kerala’s Silent Valley, a biologically rich tropical evergreen forest.
A. Silent Valley movement
The campaign sought to prevent submergence and fragmentation of a unique rainforest ecosystem.
- Ecological value: Silent Valley supports high biodiversity, endemic species, and the lion-tailed macaque, an endangered primate of the Western Ghats.
- Project concern: The proposed dam on the Kunthipuzha River would have flooded forest and altered riverine ecology.
- Participants: Scientists, writers, students, environmental groups, and citizens built public pressure, including the Save Silent Valley campaign.
- Outcome: The project was abandoned, and Silent Valley became a national park in 1984.
- Significance: Scientific evidence and public mobilization influenced national conservation decisions.
XIV. Narmada Bachao Andolan — development, displacement, and justice
The Narmada Bachao Andolan challenged large dams in the Narmada Valley, particularly the Sardar Sarovar Project, because of displacement, rehabilitation, and ecological consequences.

The movement questioned whether large-scale irrigation and electricity benefits justified concentrated social costs.
- Leadership and participation: Medha Patkar, Baba Amte, farmers, Adivasis, and displaced families formed a broad coalition.
- Main concerns: Submergence of villages, loss of agricultural and forest land, inadequate rehabilitation, and impacts on river ecology.
- Methods: Satyagraha, marches, court petitions, public campaigns, and international advocacy were used.
- Institutional impact: The World Bank’s involvement ended after an independent review identified serious environmental and rehabilitation problems.
- Analytical issue: The conflict illustrates the tension between national development goals and local rights, compensation, consent, and cumulative ecological assessment.
XV. Tehri Dam conflict — Himalayan development and risk
The Tehri Dam conflict concerned the construction of a large dam on the Bhagirathi River in present-day Uttarakhand.

Opposition focused on displacement, seismic risk, river ecology, and the social costs of submergence.
- Project features: The Tehri reservoir submerged the old Tehri town and surrounding villages; the dam was completed in the 2000s for hydropower and water supply.
- Leadership: Sunderlal Bahuguna used fasting and non-violent protest to oppose the project and demand reconsideration.
- Risk concerns: The dam lies in a seismically active Himalayan region, so earthquake safety and downstream consequences were central issues.
- Rehabilitation: Families faced relocation, loss of homes, agricultural land, local institutions, and cultural ties to place.
- Significance: The conflict demonstrates that environmental assessment must include geological risk, social displacement, downstream impacts, and transparent rehabilitation rather than only electricity output.
