BASIC ENGINEERING MECHANICS

MEC107 4 Credits L:2 T:2 P:0

This course covers the foundational concepts of forces, moments, and friction, enabling students to examine the stability and static behavior of rigid bodies. It also includes the calculation of moment of inertia, truss member force determination, and the analysis of dynamic and kinematic behavior of rigid bodies.

Study Units

Unit 1

Introduction to Mechanics

Unit 3

Centroid and Moment of Inertia

Unit 4

Analysis of structures

Unit 5

Assignment - Book Based 20%

Student will be maintaining a tutorial notebook in which he will be solving the allocated numerical problems chapter wise. Tutorial notebook will be evaluated 2 times; once before MTT and secondly after MTT. Both evaluations will be of 15 marks (5 marks for each chapter). In between during the term, surprise checking of tutorial notebook will be done by the concerned faculty member.

Week 2 / 13
Test 1 20%

Conceptual and Numerical problems covering Unit 1 and Unit 2

Week 3 / 4
Project 40%

Student will be allocated the projects in a team of 2-4 students that is distributed into 2 activities. Activity 1 includes the design and fabrication of complex shapes and locating its centroid, then it is verified analytically. Further the Moment of Inertia is to be calculated. Activity 2 includes the design and fabrication of basic trusses for application. Competition will be held for the same.
